🌞 Piwko dla ciebie! 🍻 Hey everyone! It's another hot today in Poland, and what better way to cool off than with a cold beer? I'm not usually a huge fan of beer, but on days like this, it just hits the spot—especially when you're enjoying it with friends outside. Summer is still with us, and we've got to soak it all in before the chilly days of winter roll around! For those of you trying to make friends here in Poland, here's a little tip: Take that first step! It might seem tough to break the ice, especially when you're living abroad, but trust me, it makes all the difference. Whether it's a casual "Piwko dla ciebie!" or something else, reaching out is key. Making the first move can feel intimidating, but it's the best way to connect and integrate into a new culture. And hey, it doesn't have to be beer! The important thing is to show your willingness to engage and share a moment. So don't wait around for someone else to make the first move—go out there and surprise your Polish friends with your Polish skills and a friendly gesture. You never know, it might just be the start of a beautiful friendship! 🌍🤝 Na zdrowie! 🍻 https://lnkd.in/dX3SyYj9

How many kisses do Italians give when saying hello? Last week, a student asked me how many kisses people usually give in Italy when they greet each other. The answer is: it depends! As you might know, Italy is full of diverse regional cultures, and this shows in the way people say hello, too. Generally, in most parts of the country, people give 2 kisses on the cheeks—one on the right, one on the left. But in some regions and cities in northern Italy, people actually give 3 kisses on the cheeks to greet each other! So, next time you meet an Italian friend, it might be a good idea to ask, “Two kisses or three?” That way, you can avoid any awkward moments! Now, a question for you: How many kisses do people give in your country when they greet each other? Share your answer in the comments! 👇

A Halloween Party... in Nigeria? But Who Are We Really? It’s funny, almost surreal, but it got me thinking. Sure, I get the excitement around trying out something different, something that feels straight out of Western culture. But every time we lean further into this, I wonder: Are we losing pieces of who we are? This isn’t about being “anti” any culture; it’s about celebrating our own. We’re in a time where people all over the world are curious about Africa’s authenticity, about our traditions, cultures, and our way of seeing the world. Meanwhile, we’re sometimes the ones drifting toward theirs. Halloween, summer, Thanksgiving… all fun, sure, but at what point does it blur our own cultural lines? That said, would I attend the party? Probably, for the experience. But it leaves me asking the bigger questions: Who is Africa, and are we losing our way? Are we becoming more western & less... you know... Us. There’s beauty in the unknown, in the spontaneity of our environment and how it shapes us. And that's what Africa is & represents, at least to me. During a recent seminar on Cultural Awareness, I had the pleasure of working with a sharp and insightful young Irish man. I challenged him to create a mind map of what a "typical Irish person" might look like — and the result is something truly fascinating! 🎨✨ Curious to see what he came up with? Check it out below! 👇 #CulturalAwareness #DiversityAndInclusion #Ireland #CulturalInsights • What's the craic, Ireland? (means "Hi, how are you?") (literally means "what fun are we having") • Hospitality is very important to the Irish. If you enter their house, they want to feed you. Typical of cultures who experience poverty. • One theory is why every city in the world has an Irish bar: We invented drinking without eating, so there is no need to hire a chef. • Some Irish people believe in fairies. If they build a road or house, they will avoid cutting down a "fairy tree," sometimes at huge monetary costs. • Having the craic means drinking beer, telling jokes, telling stories, making music, and socialising chaotically and freely with friends and strangers. • Ireland has many artists, musicians, writers, and poets relative to population size. • "Céad Míle Fáilte" means one hundred thousand welcomes in Irish.

Poetry and Music Know No National Borders, or Religious Divides So we come again to that time of year when we – well, some of us – strive to be filled with benevolence towards our fellow man. We try to forget things that divide us. But there is a simpler way. I submit that good music and poetry perform that task for us. For good music/ poetry recognize no national borders, or political/religious divides, or even (in the case of music) differences in language. Sure, all of us are likely to be entranced by the lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel (https://lnkd.in/eNUkXuZf) or ABBA (https://lnkd.in/eNUkXuZf) or the Bee Gees (https://lnkd.in/eEzCzEkg). But how many of us can fail to be moved by Kaoma Lambada in Portuguese (https://lnkd.in/eb7ikQqk)? Or L’Italiano by the Gypsy Queens in Italian (https://lnkd.in/eG6rXkT6)? Or Alize’s ‘Lolita’ in French (https://lnkd.in/eqUtq_FK)? Or even the best of Nazia Hassan in Urdu (https://lnkd.in/eqvZwphU), though this last might be a bit of a stretch if you don’t understand the language, since the lyrics are a truly important part of the experience here. (Note that the musical examples cited above are simply songs that I personally like – I don’t claim that they will become the favorites of everyone reading this. However, I think it will hard for anyone to actively dislike them). And then there’s poetry, though obviously you DO need to understand the language it’s written in. In my opinion, though, good poetry does cut across national/ racial/ religious divides rather well. And as proof of this, I submit a poem we studied in middle school in India (along with the works of the likes of Rudyard Kipling and the prose of R.K.Narayan): (https://lnkd.in/eycm3iZ7) “Abou Ben Adhem BY LEIGH HUNT Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!) Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace, And saw, within the moonlight in his room, Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom, An angel writing in a book of gold:— Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold, And to the presence in the room he said, "What writest thou?"—The vision raised its head, And with a look made of all sweet accord, Answered, "The names of those who love the Lord." "And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so," Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low, But cheerly still; and said, "I pray thee, then, Write me as one that loves his fellow men." The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night It came again with a great wakening light, And showed the names whom love of God had blest, And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.” Now personally, I am an agnostic. But that poem has stuck in my head for the past 60 years, so it had to be pretty darn good. KNS
