📌 In June 2024 the #PompidouGroup conducted assessment visits in Slovenia and Cyprus to assist local authorities in developing a comprehensive and human rights-based approach for the treatment and rehabilitation of people with substance use disorders in custodial settings. 🔎 In Slovenia, experts discussed plans to develop two prison-based therapeutic communities (TCs) for treating substance use disorders. In Cyprus, proposals were provided to establish a day-care unit within the prison complex in Nicosia for people with substance use disorders. 📋 Takeaways from these visits will be presented to the other members of Pompidou Group’s South-East European co-operation group of prison professionals during their fourth study visit in Strasbourg, France, on 24-26 September 2024. 🔗 Further reading about the assessment visits: https://lnkd.in/g8AuY95N

📢 In Ukraine the country’s first in-prison therapeutic community for treating addictions will be established! 🤝 As part of the newly launched Council of Europe project DECOPRIS, the #PompidouGroup will assist with the setup and with advancing the roll out of opioid agonist treatment in prison and pre-trial detention. These actions will contribute to the overall goals in building modern prison and probation systems with a focus on shifting from punitive to rehabilitative approaches. 🔗 View all Council of Europe activities in Ukraine focusing on resilience, recovery and reconstruction in the context of war and post-conflict recovery: https://lnkd.in/dhD_78V3

Condom provision in prison settings often encounters significant resistance due to misconceptions and stereotypes. Many falsely believe that providing condoms encourages sexual activity or implies institutional acceptance of prohibited behaviors. However, this perspective overlooks the critical public health benefits of reducing the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among the prison population, which ultimately impacts community health post-release. Our latest article with Heino Prof. Stöver touches on this issue. This is an individual compassion-focused, therapy-based intervention adapted from traditional compassionate-focused therapy to reduce psychopathic traits in youth in a correctional setting in Portugal. The program, implemented in Portugal, is designed specifically to reduce psychopathic traits and antisocial behavior in youths (ages 14 to 18) who are diagnosed with a conduct disorder and being held in a detention setting, while restoring the balance of the motivational and emotional regulation systems of youths through the promotion of compassionate motivation. The program is rated Promising. The program was shown to statistically significantly decrease measures of psychopathic traits, grandiose manipulative, callous–unemotional, impulsive irresponsible, daring irresponsible, and conduct disorder traits. https://lnkd.in/dHsJmy7f

Portugal proposes integration of prison health into its National Health Service "This ambitious plan outlines 108 specific actions to transform health care within Portugal's detention facilities," said Filipa Alves da Costa, a public health consultant for the WHO/Europe Health In Prisons Programme, who observed the working group. The integration of prison health into the country's National Health Service has the potential to improve the lives of incarcerated individuals in Portugal and strengthen public health overall, leading to fewer cases of noncommunicable diseases and fewer premature deaths. SDG 3.4 calls for reducing the premature mortality from NCDs by one third by 2030 - through prevention and treatment and promoting mental health and well-being. https://lnkd.in/e_8-ZzeF #PublicHealth #Europe #StayInformed #StayEmpowered

Drug use is a public health issue, not a crime. It's time to shift our focus from punishment to rehabilitation. Let's destigmatize people who use drugs (PWUD) and advocate for their dignity and empathy. Hope Behind Bars Africa is proud to join YouthRISE Nigeria's #wearepeoplecampaign to emphasize compassion over punishment, which is also crucial for decongesting our correctional centers. With a drug use prevalence of 14.4%, Nigeria's current enforcement-based approach isn't working. We need prevention and evidence-based strategies. Let's lead with compassion. #RehabilitationOverPunishment #youthrisenigeria #drugpolicyreform #nostigma
