𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 Imagine that ultrasound scans are conducted by robots. In medical imaging, ultrasound is used to examine organs such as the liver, the pancreas, or the kidney. Today’s ultrasound depends on expertise and skill, and the process is physically exhausting. So what about a robot doing the scanning? 🤔 This breakthrough was presented in a recent paper: a Fully Autonomous Robotic Ultrasound System (FARUS). The system is used for scanning the thyroid region. One of the challenges is that a robot needs to account for the variability of the human body across individuals (in this case, the anatomy of the neck region). Scanning the body using a predetermined trajectory is therefore not possible. FARUS uses reinforcement learning to accomplish the thyroid search process. A deep Q-network learns to accurately predicts the precise movements to guide the robotic arm. Bayesian optimization is used to optimize the ultrasound probe orientation. Next to robotics, computer vision using the deep learning U-net algorithm is used to segment the thyroid and nodules from the medical images. Images acquired by FARUS have good quality. Most participants reported to feel safe. FARUS was more stable in terms of force, velocity and positioning of the probe. But manual scanning by doctors was faster. Smaller or low-contrast nodules were more difficult to detect for FARUS. Of course, this may still improve in the future. #robotics #reinforcementlearning #deeplearning #medicalimaging

𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼-𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 🧠: 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 A new paper by researchers at King's College London has highlighted how the use of robots to treat #stroke patients autonomously could widen access to time-sensitive #emergency procedures. ✂️Surgical procedures known as 𝙢𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙚𝙨 (𝙈𝙏) have become an established treatment for patients suffering from the blocking of large blood vessels, with rapid intervention increasing the likelihood that a patient will be able to care for themselves independently after a stroke. ⌚ The times between the first onset of stroke symptoms until treatment is crucial, as the benefits of MT become more marked the sooner a blood clot is removed. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻? The initial stage of the MT procedure involves navigating catheters and wires from the groin into the neck vessels. 💡Researchers using computer modelling show that this step has the potential to be undertaken autonomously using AI navigation. 💡They also explored various methods to teach the AI.
