College Success Coach | Educator | Author | I help college instructors improve first year outcomes through connection and success habits
College freshmen are less than three months out of high school when classes start. For some reason, we often expect them to have a full grasp on the academic behaviors that are conducive to college success. News flash: They often don't. For those of us who teach college freshmen, let's meet them where they are. That means guiding them where they need to be by subtly incorporating habits of success into your class. #HabitsOfSuccess #CollegeTeaching #TeachingFreshmen #CollegeSuccess

College is daunting for any freshmen, but it can be especially nerve-wracking for first generation students who may be unfamiliar with higher education terms and lingo. St. Mary's College in Indiana decided to help by creating a video series, recruiting other first gen students to welcome freshmen to higher ed and give them tips for success. This Inside Higher Ed article explains: https://lnkd.in/eYpjmndd

College Success Coach | Educator | Author | I help college instructors improve first year outcomes through connection and success habits
As your students prepare to leave campus for the Thanksgiving break, you know some of them are going home to have "the talk" with their parents about how things are going. Some are in a great position ahead of the college convo. Some will ask you for second chances and extra credit. Others will take no action despite where they stand. To make it a little better for some, remind them there are actions they can take to improve their chances of passing your course, then let them know what they are. Remember, your freshmen were in high school less than 6 months ago and not everyone has figured out how to be a good college student. Whether or not you provide second chances to submit work or provide extra credit is your business. The key is to communicate to students what they CAN do, and put the ball in their court. Take a few minutes before the break to help them understand what proactive looks like at this point in the semester instead of waiting for them to react later. Empower them to use their break effectively. #CollegeTeaching #TeachingFreshmen #ModelForThem #ConnectingWithStudents #StudentEmpowerment

Hello there ! As a freshman in NITK, I didn’t do much to publicise what I had been doing throughout an entire semester. I was invested in different activities but never really felt like talking about them freely. But seeing certain posts by my friends all over LinkedIn, I realised that sharing one’s feelings and experiences , however, small or seemingly insignificant , have the capability to help oneself reflect upon their life and identify their actual progress. They also act as a learning aid for others new to this platform. At least that is what I have taken up from such posts of friends. These posts about achievements and failures don’t necessarily have to inspire you to do the same task, rather it will create a spark in you to start something in one’s own domain. Now that my end semester examinations are over, I would like to spend more time analysing how one navigates through this unique platform of experiential learning. I wouldn’t say this article is meant for learning as such, rather it could be taken as an example of me coming out of my limited box and trying out something different. I believe that this could be the learning that one could infer from this. Thank you for patiently reading till here. P.S: More posts are yet to come.

As the "Back to School" wave has been going around the country bringing the excitement of the new school/academic year, we also decided to catch the wave. By doing so, Shageldi Ovezov and I have put together a cheat sheet explaining some of the best strategic approaches (proven on a personal case) to help you get the best out of your college experience. We will start the series with the edition dedicated to college freshmen who are excited to start a new chapter of their lives. Yet, this will not be an extensive list of "dos" and “don’ts” but rather try to give some perspective. “Always say yes” (except to strangers who offer candy on the street) is the gist of this post. To break this down further, as you start the new academic year, there will be a lot of student organizations trying to get people on board, organize an event or start a new initiative. Although doing anything besides what is necessary may not seem exciting, it does pay off once done properly and is one of the best ways to explore the institution along with what it has to offer. The objective is to get to know as many people as possible and connect with them in one way or another. Doing this early on will enable you to get access to people and information – two things needed to open any door of opportunity (that you may not even realize is out there). As a friendly reminder, Shageldi Ovezov and I still continuing to offer a 30-minute 1 on 1 discussion for anyone who thinks they can benefit from it. Nearly 70% of college freshmen matriculate with a high school GPA equivalent to A- or higher. Stellar grades in the college admission process is the norm, not the exception. Identifying how a student will stick out above the pack is essential. Message me to start talking about your high schoolers and how they can start to think about extracurriculars and passion projects. #college #collegeadmission #collegecounseling #collegeplanning #iec #expertadvice

More and more, freshmen learners have multiple stressors on their plate coming into a university environment. This week we will discuss the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats they manage in relation to their academic skills and preparedness for college. This class, UNIV 101, asks freshmen students to self-reflect and ask these important questions. The goal for them is to gain a clearer understanding of what characteristics they bring to the academic table and how they can hone and focus these traits to their academic benefit.

Have you talked to your freshmen students about the way grades really work? Before they go home at Thanksgiving, remind them about weighted grades, your grading and late work policies and to check the LMS for their current standing. Freshman tend to think they can always pull it out at the last minute, but they don't always remember the game has changed. As freshman instructors, you're dealing with students who often have multiple opportunities to submit an assignment, get second chances, and extra credit. Finding out your class doesn't work that way may hit them hard. While they can't get a complete redo, they can start from now and do as much as they can. Remind them the ball is in their court. #3MoreWeeks #4thAnd10 #CollegeSuccess #CollegeFreshman #TeachingFreshmen
