MUSIC LOVERS...WHERE HAVE ALL THE BANDS GONE? My good friend sent me an IG article below which is interesting, please view. It’s not that the talent isn’t out there, there are great musicians and bands, yet a huge proportion of them are not signed by major record labels, (of course some may not want to be) but the strategy for major record labels seems to be to work with solo artists looking at the charts. There is still SO MUCH talent out there, yet it doesn’t seem to get the recognition or profiling it should. What’s gone wrong? It’s been like this for some time....who are record labels employing to sign artists and more importantly the people they employ, what is their strategy for signing artists now? Is it maybe that bands can’t afford to get off the ground, as it costs too much money to hire venues and many venues have shut down? Will we ever see the likes of talent that we had in previous decades at the forefront again unless something changes? Any thoughts/constructive comments welcome! https://lnkd.in/eK4GFXqR

New Post: What if Streaming Royalties Favored Listening to Songs in their Entirety? - https://lnkd.in/guqkyG-B - In 2022, Will Page, the former director of economics at Spotify, encouraged a U.K. committee looking into streaming economics to consider how collecting societies have divvied up fixed pots of cash for more than 100 years. A fairer system for paying royalties, he said, might consider how long a person listens. Page’s suggestion wasn’t a new, radical idea. Other royalty accounting systems already take listening time into account. In the U.K., collection societies such as PRS For Music and PPL apply a “value per second” rule to royalty payouts. So, Page explained, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which clocks in at 5:55, earns twice the royalty as “You’re My Best Friend,” which runs just 2:52. A similar approach is codified into U.S. copyright law: Songs over five minutes long receive a higher mechanical royalty than shorter songs. Related New House Bill Aims to Raise Streaming Royalties for Artists by Tacking on Additional… 03/07/2024 But streaming platforms have long paid royalties using a “pro rata” method that treats every song equally. At Spotify, for example, any two songs by Queen are treated the same. But there has been a movement in recent years to make royalty payments fairer to non-superstar artists. SoundCloud adopted a user-centric approach that pays royalties from each listener rather than pool all listeners’ revenue. Deezer has a “user-centric” approach — adopted by Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Merlin — which rewards professional artists at the expense of “functional” music. Two years after testifying to the committee, Page has released a paper, “A Case for Completion,” that outlines how streaming platforms could reward songs that get streamed in their entirety. The idea is simple: For each stream, the streaming service asks whether the song was streamed to completion. If the song was skipped before the listener got to the end, a portion of the royalties are transferred to songs that were streamed to completion. The financial model looks like this: Labels earn about 50 million pounds ($64 million) for 10 billion streams. Page estimates that 10% of the songs will not be streamed to completion. Of those songs’ 5 million-pound ($6.4 million) royalty pool, 40%, or 1.3 million pounds ($1.7 million), goes to the completed songs’ royalty pool. That in turn increases the completed songs’ pool from 45 million pounds ($58 million) to 46.3 million pounds ($59.6 million). On a per-stream basis, a typical 0.0048-pound ($0.0062)

New Post: Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign’s ‘Carnival’ Hits No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 - https://lnkd.in/gKygPUQj - Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) and Ty Dolla $ign’s “Carnival,” featuring Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti, rises to No. 1, from No. 2, on the Billboard Hot 100. The song marks Ye’s fifth leader and Ty Dolla $ign’s second, as well as the first each for Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti. Meanwhile, Ye extends his span of career Hot 100 No. 1s to over 20 years, becoming the first rap artist to achieve the feat. Ye is also the first rapper ever to have topped the Hot 100 in three distinct decades (the 2000s, ‘10s and ‘20s). The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated March 16, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, March 12. For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram. “Carnival,” which becomes the 1,165th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s 65-year history, drew 33.7 million streams (up 4%) and 3.9 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 85%) and sold 3,000 downloads (up 15%) in the March 1-7 tracking week, according to Luminate. The single adds a third week atop the Streaming Songs chart and jumps 19-13 for a new high on Digital Song Sales. The track was released Feb. 10 on Ye and Ty Dolla $ign’s collaborative album Vultures 1, on the former’s YZY label. The set, Ye’s first following a string of hate speech and antisemitic remarks, debuted at No. 1 on the Feb. 24-dated Billboard 200 chart and led for two weeks; it holds at No. 3 in its fourth week on the list. Here’s a deeper look at the song’s ascent to the Hot 100’s summit. - #news #business #world -------------------------------------------------- Download: Stupid Simple CMS - https://lnkd.in/g4y9XFgR -------------------------------------------------- or download at SourceForge - https://lnkd.in/gNqB7dnp

New Post: Will Morgan Wallen Give Post Malone the ‘Help’ He Needs for Another No. 1 Debut? - https://lnkd.in/dsa5Amb9 - The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. Next week (for the upcoming Billboard Hot 100 dated May 25), even with huge breakout hits cluttering the top of the charts, a big new collab may threaten to zoom past all of them. Post Malone feat. Morgan Wallen, “I Had Some Help” (Republic/Mercury/Big Loud): Undoubtedly the biggest debut of the week will come from these genre-spanning Republic labelmates. While 2010s superstar Post Malone’s commercial fortunes have largely been declining this decade – 2023’s Austin became the first LP of his career to not spawn a single top 10 Hot 100 hit – he’s been buoyed this year by collabs with arguably the three biggest names in contemporary popular music: Beyoncé (the Cowboy Carter standout “Levii’s Jeans”), Taylor Swift (the Tortured Poets Department lead single and two-week Hot 100 No. 1 “Fortnight”) and now Morgan Wallen. Post’s latest star teamup looks like it might be on its way to following “Fortnight” to the Hot 100’s apex. “I Had Some Help” — apt title – reached the top of the daily and real-time charts on Spotify, Apple Music and iTunes shortly after its release on Friday (May 10), which is no small feat in this crowded a time for pop music. And while brand-new songs usually struggle to be competitive in the radio department, “I Had Some Help” has received such an instantly massive embrace on the airwaves that it’s actually already ahead of most of its primary competitors there: It’s drawn 17.3 million all-format airplay impressions in its first four days of wide release (May 10-13), according to Luminate, and made immediate-enough impact on country radio to debut at No. 18 on this week’s Country Airplay chart with just one day’s worth of plays (May 9). In another week – like, say, virtually any other week in May from 2020 to 2023 — “I Had Some Help” would be a no-brainer No. 1 debut. But of course, this has been an unusually loaded season for pop music, and “Help” will have to maintain its early momentum throughout the week to secure an entrance at pole position. If it does start atop the Hot 100, it will already mark the fifth different song to best the chart in the last six weeks, and the 13th different song total through 20 chart weeks this year – compared to both 2022 and 2023, where there were just seven total through the first 20 chart weeks. Kendrick Lamar, “Not Like Us” (pgLang/Interscope/ICLG): It’s a little ridiculous that “Not Like Us” is really going to have to work to defend its title on the Hot 100 next week, since it debuted atop the chart with just five days of tracking this week and shouldn’t be slowing down

New Post: Universal Music Group and DGMC Want to Build a ‘Music City’ in the UAE - https://lnkd.in/g9VUxdr6 - Universal Music Group is poised to open its first Capitol Studios outside of Hollywood, plus live performance spaces, music education academies and a new record label, as part of a collaboration with DGMC in the burgeoning music hub of the United Arab Emirates. UMG and DGMC, a UAE-based music organization, will work together to build what’s described as a “Music City” that will serve as a regional hub for both local and global recording artists and songwriters in the fast-growing Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The planned studios will include all the latest accoutrement, including a Dolby Atmos mixing room, state-of-the-art recording equipment and rehearsal rooms for artists and writers. The label will be a joint venture between the two companies and will work to turn local artists into global stars. “At its heart, the UMG-DGMC partnership’s aim is to support and nurture talented artists and songwriters in the region and help them reach their full creative and commercial potential,” the companies said in a joint announcement on Monday (Feb. 12). The tie-up follows on the heels of UMG’s acquisition of UAE-based music company Chabaka late last summer to become part of Virgin Music Group. An increasingly attractive region for music mergers and acquisitions, MENA had the highest growth rate of any global region in 2021 and the third-fastest growth — 23.8% — in 2022, according to the IFPI. “We have long recognized the potential in the Middle East, and are incredibly proud to be working with world-class partners like DGMC,” said Adam Granite, executive vp of market development for UMG. “We share their excitement and vision to harness this potential and nurture the next generation of recording artists and songwriters. Our partnership will create a powerful platform for the incredible talent in the region and accelerate their careers at home and abroad.” - #news #business #world -------------------------------------------------- Download: Stupid Simple CMS - https://lnkd.in/g4y9XFgR -------------------------------------------------- or download at SourceForge - https://lnkd.in/gNqB7dnp

New Post: Clean Bandit & Zara Larsson’s ‘Symphony’ Leads TikTok Billboard Top 50 for Second Week - https://lnkd.in/g-6P2HDb - The top two of the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart remains the same, with Clean Bandit’s “Symphony” and Surf Curse’s “Disco” at Nos. 1 and 2, while Sabrina Carpenter’s “Taste” nears the top by jumping 9-3 on the ranking dated Sept. 7. The TikTok Billboard Top 50 is a weekly ranking of the most popular songs on TikTok in the United States based on creations, video views and user engagement. The latest chart reflects activity from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1. Activity on TikTok is not included in Billboard charts except for the TikTok Billboard Top 50. @katseyeworld us: 🐬💙💎🩵🐬 #KATSEYE #KATSEYELara #KATSEYEManon ♬ Symphony – Clean Bandit, Zara Larsson “Symphony,” which features Zara Larsson, logs a second week at No. 1 after debuting at the top of the Aug. 31 tally. That’s as streams of the 2017 track continue to rise, accruing 1.5 million official U.S. streams in the week ending Aug. 29, up 84%, according to Luminate. (The song reached No. 10 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart in 2017.) As mentioned in the article announcing the Aug. 31-dated TikTok Billboard Top 50, “Symphony” is driven on TikTok by a trend using a meme featuring colorful dolphins, often with captions that go against the lively photos and videos and take a darker tone. Larsson herself eventually used the meme in the background during one of her concerts as a nod to the trend. Surf Curse’s “Disco” remains at No. 2 via a two-person trend, begetting yet another rise in streams to 2.8 million in the week ending Aug. 29 (up 67%). Carpenter’s “Taste” sports a big gain at No. 3, up from its No. 9 debut Aug. 31 that occurred despite just three days of tracking following its Aug. 23 release. With a full week of data, it rises to No. 3, concurrent with its No. 2 debut on the Billboard Hot 100, as previously reported. @ur.favorite.baxt3r i js want the frame #shortnsweet ♬ Taste – Sabrina Carpenter “Taste” benefits from a feature in which users can create a custom frame by using the song, as well as lip-synch clips and content reposting the song’s music video. Overall, Carpenter sports three appearances on the latest TikTok Billboard Top 50. “Bed Chem” debuts at No. 18, while “Please Please Please,” which peaked at No. 2 in June, ranks at No. 36. @ladygaga ❄️ ♬ Die With A Smile – Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars “Die With a Smile,” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, and Alphaville’s “Forever Young” round out the top five, both reaching the region for the first time. New Post: Remembering the Music Industry Players Who Died in 2024 - https://lnkd.in/gZSrnYEC - There’s simply no way around it. The music industry, with all its boundless nooks and crannies, will say farewell to many behind-the-scenes players over the course of 2024. From corporate executives of all stripes, to agents, managers and live promoters, to deal-making lawyers and policy-influencing lobbyists, and studio producers and other knob-twisters and songwriters, they are all part of the fabric of music. To honor those who have passed on, we’re highlighting these often-unsung individuals who’ve left a lasting impression across every aspect of the business. In the early months of 2024, we’ve already lost important figures including exacting rock engineer Steve Albini, MTV pioneer Gale Sparrow, consequential lawyer Leon Wildes, a pair of BBC Radio icons, an inventor of one of music’s weirdest devices and the Svengali-like figure who gave the world Milli Vanilli. Here are the industry players we’ve lost in 2024: - #news #business #world -------------------------------------------------- Download: Stupid Simple CMS - https://lnkd.in/g4y9XFgR -------------------------------------------------- or download at SourceForge - https://lnkd.in/gNqB7dnp
