Designers, how do you define the difference between a Senior, Staff and Principal designer? Been hearing a lot of wide ranging definitions of in particular staff level.

You are what you design. To be a senior designer, you need to design complex functional designs. If your portfolio is full of basic concepts, that's the type of job you'll get. Wanna get a senior position or bigger clients? Show that you're capable of it.

As the design profession evolves, job titles like Design Engineer, Coherence Generator, and Design Futurist may emerge, reflecting the expanding scope and focus areas of the field. However, at its core, the role remains centered on problem-solving and enhancing people's lives through thoughtful design solutions. Regardless of the specific title, taking pride in identifying as a designer who tackles challenges and creates meaningful impact is what truly matters. The ability to reframe design as a problem-solving endeavor enables designers to apply their skills across diverse contexts. As a designer, I take pride in contributing to products that positively impact people's lives. In the case of the ADT video doorbell, I collaborated on the user experience and styled the exterior design. Whenever I see it in commercials, I whisper to myself or tell my kids, "I designed that," knowing it's keeping millions of people safe across the US.

How do you explain what a Level Designer does to people outside of gamedev? I usually follow this formula: As a Level Designer, I create virtual spaces for a videogame with a specific gameplay in mind. It’s a bit similar to what an architect does but with a few key differences. Architects design spaces for long-term use, aiming for the well-being of future occupants. In contrast, level designers craft spaces that aim for different emotions: fear, struggle, empowerment, a sense of mystery, etc. We’re not constrained by real-world physics or building codes, and visitors usually spend only a few minutes in each section. #leveldesign
