What a valuable day! A great array of perspectives shared at the annual Association of Town & City Management conference, focusing on housing in town centres and high streets. The paucity of housing stock in the UK is negatively impacting citizens’ lives: - More than 82,000 children live in temporary accommodation in London - 45,170 households are in temporary accommodation in the rest of England - 22% of homeless children have to move school multiple times as a result of living in temporary accommodation - Older tenants are frightened of eviction if they complain about their rented flats as they will struggle to find another rental property  - Housing conditions influence our physical health as well as mental health and wellbeing. Many of the ‘homes’ being created under the Permitted Development Rights are simply unfit for habitation. It’s the #livedexperience of people behind the stats that should be at the forefront of our minds when thinking about housing. Who are we designing for, what types of homes do they need, where do they need them and what services should be nearby? Where will they be able to socialise, play, buy fresh food, train for a marathon, and walk their dog? Hey friends! 👋 Did you know that intergenerational residential communities are tackling some of today’s biggest issues—like social isolation and housing affordability? These communities intentionally mix people of all ages, helping neighbors connect, support each other, and create a sense of belonging. 🏡❤️ It’s a pretty brilliant concept—grandparents, young professionals, and kiddos all thriving together, sharing space (but not houses!) and creating bonds across generations. However, it’s not always easy getting these communities off the ground. Things like zoning, subsidies, and funding hurdles slow progress. A new report, "Healthier Lives Across Generations: A Blueprint for Intergenerational Living", offers some fantastic strategies to overcome these challenges.
