Discounting is a downward spiral and deflates brand value. Especially when in response to a competitor's discount. Sure, consumers may win for the short term: "I only buy that when it's on sale, which is it every week!" But brands lose. I'm happy to see from this coverage in The Wall Street Journal that Starbucks and Keurig are moving past their "discount war" (because it's not working: overall sales are down) and focusing on added value, services, and loyalty rewards. When Pricing Goes Wrong... While doing some Christmas shopping over the weekend in a liquor store in Tucson, AZ, I stumbled upon this range of Cointreau. Same brand, same product, 3 different bottle sizes: 0.75L, 1L, and 1.75L. However, when looking at the prices, I was very surprised. The 0.75L bottle was more expensive than the 1L bottle. Furthermore, when comparing the prices per liter, it was very difficult to understand the logic. I'm guessing there is a reason for this discrepancy (perhaps to move faster a particular part of the assortment or to ensure adequate stock?). However, from a customer's perspective, it truly doesn't make any sense. Even worse, when I checked the liquor store's website, the prices were the same except for the 1.75L bottle, which was priced at $79.99 online (instead of $84.99 in-store). This highlights another crucial reason why measuring in-store conversion is necessary to understand how shoppers react to your value proposition. #customerexperience #pricing #Amoobi #storevisit

Thursday Rant - the products in our supermarkets seem to be getting silly! I think the phrase is "stating the blxxxing obvious" seems to apply to loads of the products I am seeing on the shelves. We have bags of nuts that state "may contain nuts", we have shrinkflation, we have offers that aren't offers and only yesterday I went to buy a popular brand of Tomato Ketchup and was presented with about 8 different bottles all contradicting each other in terms of price and value for money. Some had prices for a larger bottle twice as cheap as a smaller one and a squeezy version was a £1 more than a glass bottle for the same size. It's great to have choice but cans of pop are a great example of just how complicated it is to choose the cheapest. 6 pack, 10 pack, 12 pack, 18 pack box, 24 can box, 30 can box all at different prices and not what you expect. Buying 2 x 6 packs on promotion was cheaper than buying a 12 pack - no wonder our brain hurts when we go shopping! Rant over!

It looks as though the shift from “margin at any cut” to “customer experience” has begun again. Starbucks just released its new in store adjustments and they are clearly made with the third place in mind. ✅ Condiment bar is back! ✅ Free refills on hot and iced coffee in store. ✅ No more up charge for non dairy milk. ✅In store drinks served in cups and glasses. Some of these are very welcome and are likely table stakes to a reasonable experience (condiment bar and alternative milks). The other two are interesting. Given how busy an average Starbucks is, how will they manage the free refill process? A different line? And washing all of the glasses, what was the cost for retro fit the stores?
