Food - EU - new approach? How to prepare for the anticipated changes in environment and society?

A strategic dialogue on what agri-food in Europe needs in a long-term perspective and a predictable way forward is most needed. While prioritizing economic interests, we must ensure that it doesn't eclipse the imperative for social and environmental justice. I appreciate the emphasis on inclusive policies aligning with the values of the EU. However, I firmly believe that investing in sustainable agriculture and nurturing new growers is vital, particularly with an aging population. Without such investments, Europe risks facing higher imported inflation and a local production void. Let's advocate for a future where sustainable practices and support for new growers take center stage in our agricultural policies. #futurefarming #sustainableagriculture #nurturingyoungminds

The ultimate goal is to develop a common pathway that elevates the standards of living for farmers/communities within the planetary Boundaries. Good to see all stakeholders on the table: farmers, academia, consumers, industry, financial sector. The challenge is to address the increasing polarization around Agri Food sector by balancing diverse interests fairly. It is possible to follow live the "Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture" organised by the European Commission. Marcel van der Vliet, president of our umbrella organisation CELCAA is there to defend the importance of agri-trade and competiveness of agri (and wine) companies. One important point from our side: There is an ambition to render even more sustainable the production of EU food; fair and we are supportive, but adapting production process has a cost. To maintain the competitiveness of EU companies we need, in parallel to this improvement process, to reduce the cost of marketing within the Single Market. To do so, the European Commission must protect the #SingleMarket by harmonising standards and legislations and fight national legislation that acts as a barrier to trade. We need a Strong Single market for competitive EU agri-companies.

Parallel to this, we need to strengthen trade chains between countries that supply food to Europe. This approach requires serious compliance with climate change mitigation and adaptation policies.
