I'm still feeling the positive effects of the many deep human-to-human connections made at Fleet & Mobility Live this week. To all of those I met, thanks a lot for your time, your ideas and the energy your transferred on to me! Starting on your own and going back to full-time pure business development is sole-crushing. Thankfully there are the conferences to prop me up! I've been preparing a few notes for a mate who asked for my top tips to get the best of conferences. Here's my list so far: Get in the right Mindspace. Be present and make every interaction count. Quality fuels - bring your lunch (usually everything around shows is crap and will make you feel tired), carry water, don't abuse coffee, avoid all the sweets Physical activity - try to train before you go or right after you come back Take a couple breaks without anyone to help you digest what you've just taken in Have clear intent when you prepare for the conference. Why are you going there? What are you trying to achieve? Focus on deep interactions instead of shallow ones. Better have less, more engaging meetings instead of many light ones. Planning - look at sessions/speakers/attendees in advance and reach out to try and set-up meetings in advance. You'll be able to use this as a good excuse to reach out after if you don't manage to connect live at the conference Arrive early and walk around quick to spot where you want to spend your time Be there for the last 20 minutes, this is when people are much more open and traffic dies down, so they'll appreciate a good deep discussion to carry them through the end Be alert and spot signs that the person you're meeting wants to move on. Don't hog them for too long, or it will leave a bad impression. You're better off scheduling a follow-up. The ideal is to agreed on a date on the spot rather than having to chase them over email later. Prep in advance for the meetings you've agreed to have Lessons learned from this year: despite quite a bit of time invested, pre-booking meetings didn’t work for me - I reached out of about 25 outreaches, only 1 booking completed. Maybe my outreach message was poor. I'm not sure the value in tagging everyone I met and didn't meet in my debrief post. I need to ask a few people about this. Note: I didn't have a fancy picture of me on stage (I love the stage, but no invites to speak yet! 😉). I was relying on the organisers to post professional photos taken live during the event, but unfortunately, I couldn't find anything else than this highlights video! What?!?
