The BMW Group is testing humanoid robots in production for the first time at their Spartanburg plant. During a trial, Figure 02, a humanoid robot from California-based Figure, successfully inserted sheet metal parts into fixtures for chassis assembly. This robot's dexterity is essential for the task and aims to alleviate employees from ergonomically challenging tasks. The trial run aims to evaluate the safe integration of humanoid robots into automobile production. Figure 02, equipped with advanced technology, performed autonomously, handling complex tasks requiring precise manipulation and coordination. It features enhanced processing power, improved voice communication, better cameras, sensors, and a high-performance battery. Its human-like hands have 16 degrees of freedom and human-equivalent strength, allowing it to execute tasks with millimeter accuracy. BMW's iFACTORY vision focuses on efficiency, digitalization, and sustainability, continuously seeking new technologies. The trial provided valuable insights for integrating multi-purpose robots into existing production systems and how these robots can communicate with the system under real conditions. Figure 02 represents significant advancements in robotics, suitable for physically demanding, unsafe, or repetitive tasks, improving ergonomics and safety. While there is no set timeline for deploying Figure robots at the Spartanburg plant, BMW and Figure are collaborating to develop the robots further for future applications. For decades, robots have been used to apply paint to new cars during manufacture, improving safety for employees while yielding the benefits of increased efficiency and more consistent paint application. But even with the precision and reproducibility of robot-applied finishes, vehicles still need to be visually checked in order to identify any potential paint defects. Until relatively recently, these labour-intensive and time-consuming inspections would have to be carried out manually – and, even with the keenest of eyes, always with the natural risk of human error. With modern technology, however, this process in the paint shop at the Porsche plant in Leipzig has been significantly streamlined. Team members in the inspection area are assisted by an automatic defect detection system featuring two robots, although these examples are configured a little differently to their cousins on the painting line. The BMW Group is exploring the use of humanoid robots in production for the first time. During a trial run lasting several weeks at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, the latest humanoid robot Figure 02 from California company Figure successfully inserted sheet metal parts into specific fixtures, which were then assembled as part of the chassis. The robot must be particularly dexterous to complete this production step. At the same time, using a robot can save employees from having to perform ergonomically awkward and tiring tasks. Together with Figure, the BMW Group is currently testing and evaluating how humanoid robots can be used safely in automobile production. This video shows the trial run in the body shop at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. The robot is capable of fully autonomous execution of human-like and two-handed tasks requiring varied and dynamic manipulation, complex grasping, and coordination of both hands in unison. It is able place various complex parts with accuracy measured in millimetres and can walk dynamically leveraging efficienties of the robot’s design.
