This critical role ensures the safe navigation of the vessel. It is also assigned to an adequately qualified deck officer who is knowledgeable and fit for the job and it involves different duties from watchkeeping duties to identifying of gyro errors,reviewing of the log entries and also general ship checks (safety/security rounds). An oow must be competent, trustworthy and vigilant to ensure he/she carries out their critical duties efficiently, OOW has many responsibilities and roles. 5 Jobs Deck Cadets Have to Perform Onboard (Part 1) 1. Tank Soundings: Almost all deck cadets are asked to check tank soundings on a regular basis. Generally taken after the 0400-0800 watch (before or right after breakfast), soundings are very crucial for ensuring the stability of the vessel. 2. Ship Maintenance: Generally, one deck of the superstructure is assigned to the cadet. Maintenance of that includes overall cleanliness and reporting of any abnormalities within the area. 3. LSA/FFA Maintenance:  Thorough maintenance of the life saving appliances LSA and FFA is extremely important. Generally a part of the 3rd Mate responsibilities this work is assigned to the cadets so that they learn the procedures 4. Deck Work: Assisting the ship’s bosun in everyday deck work is embedded into any cadet’s daily schedule. This is basically grounding work, seemingly unimportant at the start, but builds the framework for the coming years as an officer. 5. Berthing/Unberthing Operations: The entire deck crew is present at their respective stations to get the vessel to berth/cast off close to perfection. A cadet starts out at the stations as a sort of a rating, doing mainly the physical work. THINGS TO LOOK AFTER WHEN JOINING AS A THIRD MATE FOR THE FIRST TIME! 1. Familiarize yourself with the bridge equipment. 2. Get to know the mooring stations and mooring patterns. 3. Take inventory of your LSA (Life-Saving Appliances) and FFA (Fire Fighting Appliances) store. 4. Inspect the lifeboat and rescue boat equipment, checking for expiry dates. 5. Take inventory of flags and signaling items. 6. Conduct a general deck round to assess the condition of LSA and FFA equipment. Ensure they match the plan. 7. Understand the operation of all LSA and FFA equipment thoroughly. 8. Review ship and equipment certificates and note any that will expire during your contract. 9. Check for any LSA and FFA servicing requirements during your contract. 10. Raise requisitions as needed. Additionally, you'll need to manage your time to understand port papers and perform navigational and port watches. This checklist will serve you well every time you join as a third mate. Meet third officer Georgia 👮♀️ 🛳️ Hello everyone 👋 My name is Georgia, I’m twenty- four years old, and I’m a Third Officer and today I’m going to tell you five interesting facts about my profession that you probably didn’t know. ✨ The ship third officer, like all other functions onboard, work only six months out of the year and the other six months is off. ✨The second interesting thing is that while we are onboard, we work Monday to Monday, at least ten hours a day, no holidays or weekends. While you’re onboard, you work everyday. ✨The third interesting thing is that our license, called the seaman registration or registration booklet, is valid worldwide. So we can work onboard in any country. ✨A third officer of a ship, is not just a crew of the ship. He/she is also responsible for maneuvers, the operation of the ship, the inspection and maintenance of the afternoon safety equipment, namely the boats, the vests, the fire extinguishers also the bureaucratic work, we are very run over. ✨The fifth and the last curios thing for me that I love sailing and the most interesting one is that we have traffic rules. It’s funny to think that the ocean is so big that we don’t need it right ? But we all follow a regulation called the International Regulation for Preventing Collisions at sea. It was a chilly day in Walvis Bay where We were doing STS operation. Few takeaways and points for consideration while carrying out STS. This is for the non tanker dry cargo officers where STS happens one in a blue moon 😀. -Both ship discuss the overall plan and agree on the security protocols. -Communication methods are established which will not interfere with the port control or distress frequency. -Own ships scupper plugs are in place. - All the details provided by the Bunker manifold is noted on the movement book. -Be very vigilant on the type of alarms because sometimes We can get overflow alarms of a tank which We can communicate to the Engineers. -Both ships radars are on stand by -No Smoking on deck and open area - Apropriate day signals are displayed and in night appropriate lights -Follow the Company specific checklists. As a competent deck officer Our job is not to conduct the operation but to help and overlook and to document any minute details possible. HAPPY SAILING!!!!

“What would I learn If I could start over as a Deck Cadet?”🚢 The first time you step up on board a ship - the most exciting moment for each seafarer. You were studying for years just to have an access to the terminal gate! Crazy, yeah? 😂 Knots 🪢, basic navigation 🧭, theory of ship’s construction - that’s all subjects I still remember from the college before joining of Sailing Training Vessel as a Cadet. Question: “Was there enough hands-on knowledge for the first months on board?”. No! Studying for a profession at university provides a foundation of knowledge and skills, but may not fully prepare you for the practical, hands-on experience of a real job. Following areas of basic knowledge should be covered and won’t let put you upside-down 👌🏻⤵️ ▫️Definitions of all Maritime Conventions and it’s structure ▫️Ship’s construction - what’s the Panama lead, bollard ▫️ Abbreviations like ECR, EG room, CPA, TCPA, ▫️FFE and LSA equipment ( Fixed and portable fire extinguishing system, Lifeboats, Lliferafts, fire hoses etc) ▫️Safety precautions during ship’s operations ▫️ Lifeboat equipment ▫️ Dangerous works types / Basic definitions of Risk assessment ▫️ Navigational and GMDSS equipment Do you have something to add?
