#Water & wastewater utility governing board members are often not technical people. We must translate technical reports like asset management plans into everyday language that will motivate boards to act. Showing this type of list of critical assets and their condition is a good start!

Following the E. coli outbreak in one of the supply wells in Walkerton, Ontario, in May 2000, the significance of ensuring safe drinking water in Ontario became critically important. Our drinking water can come from various sources, leading to different natural organic matters (NOMs) present in it. As engineers, it is our responsibility to ensure a clean and dependable supply of drinking water, which is why water treatment plants are essential. At the Walkerton Water Research Center, we conducted jar tests and assessed various parameters that are enormously important in drinking water engieenring, including turbidity, UV absorbance, pH, filtered turbidity, and alkalinity. Additionally, the pilot water treatment plant was operated for nearly a day using SCADA software, during which similar parameters were analyzed both through online analyzers and laboratory measurements. It was a privilege to participate in this insightful course and acquire techniques to ensure water safety for the public, helping to prevent future incidents like the one in Walkerton. #WaterSafety #EnvironmentalEngineering #WaterTreatment #SustainableWater #PublicHealth #WaterQuality

Today, October 17th, 11 years after #flint brought water quality and environmental justice into the national conversation, this country finally has a handle on the extent and location of lead pipes across the nation thanks to #lcrr. At 120Water, my team, combined with our Engineering partners, has processed thousands of service line inventories over the past year and a half. I hope that the public asks "Why hasn't this happened sooner?" The reality of utilities that "We didn't know where they were because we didn't track them" just isn't good enough anymore. The same old excuses don't apply! If there's somebody out there complaining about the "cost of technology" or struggling with data management, reach out to me! Let's have a national conversation about why utilities must do better at tracking their basic compliance requirements and why these things must be done in a software system. I know of no other industry where I have to explain why the above two points are necessary! Do you? #theyearofCRUD #createreadupdatedelete #lcri #data #waterquality #lead #gettheleadout

Last week, I mentioned the importance of commercial laundries, particularly in relation to how little the average consumer might think about them. In another field, #wastewatertreatment and #stormwatermanagement are also vital parts of our lives (and if we're being honest, like a referee in sports, we usually only notice them when something goes wrong). Like fresh towels in your hotel room from the commercial laundries example, stormwater management and wastewater treatment don't just happen magically. They require many talented, dedicated people working together, leveraging data and science, and studying the impacts of their efforts over time to tweak their approach as needed. In the article below, Dober's Angela Espy reviewed some research, utilizing data from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, that analyzed water management practices on water quality in several bodies of water in the Chicago area. Learn about that and more, including some helpful tips on how to improve wastewater/stormwater management techniques:
#Wastewater and #stormwater management are critical functions in our lives. While it can seem like a monumental task to treat such volumes of water, it is possible (and seasoned #watertreatment professionals can make it look easy). Not only is it possible: it works. Dober Laboratory Technician Angela Espy reviewed long-term water treatment efforts by local authorities with respect to the Chicago River and how such water treatment practices can yield success stories. She also offers some recommendations to improve your water treatment practices: https://hubs.ly/Q02lQDP00

On April 25, 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) posted the Final Rule related to Legacy Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Surface Impoundments and CCR Management Units (CCRMUs). SynTerra has been on the cutting edge of CCR Rule compliance since the original CCR Rule was published in 2015, and we are prepared to take a critical look at the applicability of the Final Rule to your unique situation(s). For the owners and operators of facilities with legacy surface impoundments and CCRMUs potentially included in the Final Rule, please reach out to Kathy Webb (kwebb@synterracorp.com) or Kelly Ferri (kferri@synterracorp.com) to further discuss how SynTerra can help with any compliance needs you may have. https://lnkd.in/ghiU5AS8
