As I read of university administration 'negotiating' with students who are persecuting their peers and illegally occupying campus spaces, and, even more horrifying, protesters storming campuses, I can't help but wonder where are the adults in the room? And how many of these University Presidents are also #Directors on public or private boards? Certainly they are not demonstrating effective #leadership, decision-making or #governance. Is now the time for me to mention I might have room to add one more board seat to my portfolio?

Local school boards have more authority and ability than most people realize. Veronica Gemma, Education Director at PA Economic Growth PAC, believes school board members need to realize their power because every school board is their own governing body. They set their own policy for their district. For example, the PDE—the Pennsylvania Department of Education—put out benchmarks for academics per grade level. And the school district could use whatever materials or curriculum they choose to reach those benchmarks. In most cases, local school boards have significant authority to give leadership and guidance to critical areas in their school systems. Including the type of curriculum that’s going to be followed and many of the policies that are implemented and carried out. That’s why we believe that local school boards and having good leaders are important. But until people realize the advantages and limitations they have in their school policies, nothing will change. This is why clarity and knowledge of school boards is a necessary part of change in schools. 🙌 What is a school board policy you want to know more about?

Shoutout to Dr. Suzanne Buglione for her gracious invitation to join her doctoral class as a guest speaker at Johnson and Wales University earlier this week, where I had the privilege of sharing my story from Division I Athlete to AVP/Dean and insights on higher education leadership. Here are three key takeaways from my discussion: 1. Harnessing the Power of the Terminal Degree: During our session, I discussed the multifaceted nature of the terminal degree, illustrating how it transcends mere academic recognition. I underscored its role as a strategic asset for gaining access to opportunities, wielding influence, and actively participating in decision-making processes across various spheres. 2. Strategic Job Pursuits: Exploring the intricate dynamics of job hunting, I dissected the three essential components: (1) TITLE, (2) BRAND, and (3) JOB DUTIES. I emphasized the pivotal importance of securing a combination of at least two out of these three elements to ensure alignment with career objectives and aspirations. 3. Championing Portfolio Positions: I underscored the significance of seeking roles with a robust portfolio, highlighting how such positions offer a rich landscape for leadership development. Wayne Hoy and Megan Tschannen-Moran, leading experts in educational trust, define trust as “one party’s willingness to be vulnerable 😬to another based on the confidence that the other is benevolent ☺️, reliable 📆, competent 📝, honest 😇, and open 🗣️.” This definition of trust emphasizes the interdependence of individuals and groups within schools. They argues that trust is essential for accomplishing school goals and establishing a positive school climate. Trustworthy leadership significantly influences school effectiveness, and leaders who demonstrate the five facets of trust can more easily develop trust with faculty. Whether you are new to leadership or have a lot of experience, TRUST IS FOUNDATIONAL. I wrote this one to serve as schools in creating discussions about trust in a digestiable way. Consider using this and a text protocol from School Reform Initiative to have some discussions. Happy Homecoming weekend to all of my fellow Kentucky State University alumni! I am proud to be an HBCU graduate, more specifically a K-State grad. HBCUs provide some of the best leadership development opportunities to students that may be otherwise overlooked and undervalued. During my time at Kentucky State I learned three valuable skills in leadership: 1. Relationship building. Not only did I develop lifelong friendships and a great network(shoutout to my Kstate friend group that we refer to as The Network), but also I am still connected to various staff and faculty that I met there. I can always count ona warm hug and “how are you doing?” when I run into them. And homecomings are like a big family reunion. 2. Resilience. When you fill a campus with students from various socioeconomic backgrounds and varied accessibility to resources, you learn that where there is a will there is a way. I learned how to face challenges and not give up so easily because I had faculty members that knew how to push and encourage me to endure. I also had different friend groups from my undergrad to grad time that supported each other and held each other accountable. 3. Self-Awareness. If you have ever walked an HBCU campus you may think you have stepped into a spontaneous fashion show depending on the time of day. That is the place where we learned who we are and expressed it through our fashions, our art, and our creativity. We had a safe space to show up as authentically and fully as we could. And this allowed us to explore the emotions and layers of experience tied to that. We learned how to communicate the things we lived through that we may not have had language for because someone else had gone through it too and could give us their language. We learned how to recognize the feelings that were ours versus the feelings that had been projected on us by culture. I am product of many things, and one of those is my HBCU.
