Sometimes recovery can’t be verbalized. If someone has been suppressing their emotions through addiction for long enough, they may not know how to say “I feel angry” or that they are sad, lonely, hurt, even happy. That’s where creative expression comes in. Through art, music, and writing, people can show us how they feel. And then the healing begins. This particular group was Stress Management. You’ll notice it says management and not eradication. Because stress is going to be there - it is part of life and recovery - but the good news is that there are healthy ways we can deal with it! #wedorecover #arttherapy #expressionthroughart #expressyourfeelings #portlandtreatment #recoveryinmaine

Pain and suffering can feel like a warm hug. Healing can feel like being pushed off a cliff. One of my favorite movies is Ray, the award-winning biopic about Ray Charles. Ray battles heroin addiction, and there’s a powerful scene where he goes through an excruciating detox. What’s striking is that his healing looks like illness, while his addiction feels calm and peaceful—almost as if it’s the actual healing. This is the paradox of life. Healing can seem painful, while illness can feel comforting. That’s why we must consciously choose the path that aligns with our true purpose. Through Stillness, we can break free from the illusions of addiction. You may not be struggling with substance abuse, but ask yourself: Are you battling an addiction to certain thoughts, beliefs, or lifestyle choices that are just as harmful? Free yourself from the cycle of addictive behavior by increasing your awareness and consciously changing your choices. It’s not easy, and it can feel uncomfortable, but it’s absolutely worth it. 🙏🏽 #HealingJourney #MindfulnessMatters #BreakFree #ChooseStillness #SelfAwareness #ConsciousLiving #EmbraceChange #WellnessTransformation #MentalWellness #MindfulLeadership #InnerPeace #LetGo #PersonalGrowth

It is quite common that someone will say to me “I just don’t understand, why I can’t stop…” or a loved one might say “Why can’t they just eat?” When we add context and story, things take on a whole new meaning. Possibly that behavior provides a numbness, a sense of control, or a way out of really intense emotions that feel too hard to bear. Possibly there were compliments with weight loss that met an unmet need to feel delighted in and letting go of this feels terrifying. Possibly the hypervigilance and increased anxiety kept one safe in a chaotic environment. There is always a reason that makes the behavior make sense, and allows us to see the behavior as a brilliant survival mechanism. One can’t just start to eat. One can’t just stop the addiction. One can’t just stop feeling anxious. One can’t just stop ruminating. Understanding the context allows one to really enter their brilliance and true self. And it is connecting to this authentic self that they also find their recovery power. Step into your context. Hear and listen to the context your loved one shares with you. THEY are worth it. YOU are worth it. #antidietculture #dietculturedropout #dietculture #nondietapproach #ditchthediet #foodfreedom #intuitiveeating #anorexiarecover #Edrecoverywarrior #bodyliberation #healthateverysize #bodykindness #allbodiesarebeautiful #fatliberation #fatacceptance #bodytrust #weightstigma #bodyneutrality #complexptsd #bingeeatingrecovery #therapistsofinstagram #mentalhealthcounseling #therapyiscool #traumasurvivor #healingtrauma #innerchildhealing #intuitiveeatingjourney

Recovery stories frequently start in the darkness places, and these “rock bottoms” are something we see very often in professional practice. For someone who is struggling with addiction or is new to recovery, it can seem impossible to imagine a happier life - like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. However, as human beings, we are more resilient than we often give ourselves credit for. With the proper support, each and every person can recover, and hope returns at the heels of life’s small victories. With the correct tools and compassionate, personalised guidance and care, even the darkest moments become part of a story not just of recovery but of inner strength and transforming into something new. #rockbottom #darkestmoments #addictionrecovery #storiesofhope #resilience
