Do you take a break BEFORE you need it 🚨 Yesterday we had our Global Town Hall. This is more than a business update and sharing of our H2 focus. It is celebrating successes and reminding all of us that there is POWER in the pause (the brilliant Sophie Devonshire⚡️impactful reminder). This is a great time to spend time thinking about our year, individually and collectively. 3 key take aways.... 🌱 We have just 170 days left in 2024, when we reflect what do we notice? 🌱 When we celebrate our achievements what do we want to accelerate? 🌱 What do we aim to be different Dec 24 v 23, and do we have our how? The mid-year point is an important time to take stock, recalibrate and most importantly RELAX AND RE-ENERGISE. Take a break if you can and ideally before it is needed (#notetoself)

Feeling lucky to attend SXSW Sydney and get to watch some pretty amazing and diverse talks. Today was particularly interesting, and a few highlights were these 3 great and very different presentations. ➡️ THE Charlie Brooker, creator of Black Mirror gave us a little peek on how his mind works, his neurosis and fears of everything, and how he created some of the ideas for the episodes from the most random moments in his life. This was such a high demand talk that we had to line up for over 30 minutes to try to get in. But so worth it. ➡️ Nicole Velik from The Ideas Bodega delivered such a fun session on how to be more creative. I loved how it was a session for anyone and so interactive. She showed creativity techniques that the audience got to apply during the session. A piece I thought was particularly interesting came from a longitudinal study about levels of creativity where the highest level is genius. Results showed that 98% of kids aged 5 were considered at the genius level while only 2% have that level of creativity when they reach adulthood. We are all born being super creative but society constraints and people around you slowly kill our creativity. ➡️ Ben Crowe from Mojo Crowe talked about how you can find your mojo, confidence and happiness with examples from the sporting world. I loved the mindset focus on these 3 Ps: Play, Purpose, and Potential but there’s so much more he touched upon. Focusing on play (the process) rather than the outcome really resonates. It’s a way to ensure you focus on intrinsic motivation instead of the achievement (extrinsic motivation). It’s definitely a mindset shift though. #sxswsydney

Ask a Stupid Question Day is an annual holiday celebrated on the last school day of September. The holiday was created to encourage individuals to ask questions, even if they may seem silly or obvious. The goal is to promote critical thinking, curiosity, and learning and to create a safe and welcoming environment where individuals feel comfortable admitting what they do not know. Asking questions, “stupid” or otherwise, is a good thing within an organization, and is encouraged by CCS. By encouraging questions and promoting a culture of openness and transparency, organizations can foster collaboration and problem-solving, ultimately achieving tremendous success.   In a culture where asking questions is encouraged, individuals are more likely to feel comfortable admitting what they do not know and seeking help when needed. This can lead to greater collaboration and teamwork, as individuals work together to find solutions and achieve common goals.     If you have a question feel free to ask. You are in the no-stupid-question zone with CCS.

The clock strikes 13. 13 strikes a chord here. As it is the number of one our tribes, football club Beerschot, it has done so for generations. A simple number, a ton of emotions. During the important steps on our learning & development paths, that also happens. Or better (thanks mom!): we also do that. We go from information to emotions to survival mode. In seconds (if you’re slow 😉).

How do you articulate something as complicated as research culture? Lengthy strategy documents? Word stuffed PowerPoints? Coffee fuelled consultation meetings? Not the most inspiring way to create a new vision for the research environment. St George’s knew they had to lead with something different. They needed something to simplify complexity, engage staff and students, and stick in hearts & minds. Together with senior leaders, we at Nifty Fox Creative helped to simplify the SGUL research culture story, boil it down into 4 core ideals and turn it into a rich picture that felt quintessentially St George’s. From the petri dish nodding to their biomedical expertise, to the sights of Tooting beloved by their students, we weaved the 4 core tenets of their culture into the visual fabric of the institution. The infographic, interactive version, and 90 second trailer are now being used to embed SGUL’s research culture vision university wide.
