The The Port of Virginia, which has Walmart, Lowe's Companies, Inc.’s and other top retailers as some of its primary customers, is on track to become the widest and deepest port on the U.S. East Coast by early 2025 after a $450 million dredging project in Norfolk Harbor is completed. Ultra-large containerships that can carry over 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent cargo units have become a big money issue for port operators. These ocean vessels challenge the economics of marine servicing because their size limits traffic to one-way, cutting down on the number of ships a terminal can “turn”, while the ports make no money on transit into and out of port.

Good morning LinkedIn Family! If you haven't heard yet I'm sure our timelines will be flooded with the tragedy of one of Baltimore's longest bridge's collapsing (Francis Scott Key Bridge). A Container ship apparently struck the bridge. While this is a setback for freight if your customers had anything on the cargo ship, lets also think about the the construction workers who were on that bridge as well! I hope they can rescue anyone who was affected by this. With that being said, lets also be proactive in updating our shippers about this, if it will have a impact on their business as well. Disruption alert - Port of Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore was struck by a vessel this morning sending nearly the entire roadway structure into the water - The vessel was Singapore-registered Dali, operated by charter company Synergy Group and is time chartered by Maersk carrying Maersk customers’ cargo. Before shipping can resume into and out of the port, crews will need to pull debris out of the water and clear the 50-foot-deep channel that ships use, said William P. Doyle, a former director of the port who now heads the Dredging and Marine Construction Association of America. The Port of Baltimore — the biggest handler of US imports and exports of cars and light trucks — looks to be out of commission indefinitely. The resulting bottleneck could accelerate a shift of goods through West Coast ports. Another crucial question: Which other ports have spare capacity to handle the Ro-Ro vessels that carry automobiles if Baltimore is closed for an extended period? I beg to differ respectfully with Scott Cowan, although I get his point. If the Ports America-CSX arrangement yields results, plus anything from Norfolk Southern with their yard in Baltimore proper, then you very likely have loads in Norfolk being railed to Baltimore, where the dray community will still be needed. Seagirt itself is fine, the property is available, so if you can send CSX trains with containers from Norfolk or to a lesser degree NY/NJ, then there is very little difference for the trucker -- the cargo is getting to Seagirt for pickup, just via a train from another port rather than a ship-to-shore crane working a vessel. To the trucker, it's all the same whether the box came into Seagirt on a vessel or a train. That's why the railroads can play a major role in setting up a land bridge for now.

Marine shipping is the most efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable mode for moving cargo, achieving 558 per cent lower GHG emissions than trucking, and carrying the same amount of cargo in one season as 7.1 million truck trips. It also supports $66.1 Billion in economic activity throughout North America, approximately 360,000 jobs, and moves 252 million tonnes of vital commodities that are key to maintaining quality of life.

In honor of #WorldTradeMonth, The Florida Ports Council shares how Florida's efficient seaports are reaching new milestones following years of global supply chain disruptions. JAXPORT is growing following progress on its major infrastructure projects to enhance container, auto, and breakbulk (non-containerized) cargo-handling operations. "Investments in port infrastructure have certainly contributed to the growing strength of our seaports," Florida Ports Council President and CEO Mike Rubin said. "Remaining an attractive and competitive seaport state will be essential to ensuring that Florida continues to secure even more cargo volume."
