Thanks so much for Wendy Moe, Laura S., and all of their University of Maryland colleagues for their partnership with our MSI team. The 2024 MSI Analytics conference in Washington DC was a terrific event. Thanks also to my Marketing Science Institute colleagues, including those pictured: Sherry Blass Pincus, PMP, Kristin Ace, Olivia Lee, and Keith Marion Smith, PhD, MBA and the team back home.
We had two main themes. The first was how organizational factors must be mastered to drive great marketing results via analytics. Stefano Puntoni pointed to surveys showing how often analytics fails because of lack of a coherent strategy. He argued that firms need to turn from seeking data-driven decisions to decision-driven data and analytics. Mary Beth Jowers and Inna Kuvich picked up that theme of how key business decisions depend on multiple constituents outside of marketing. They showed the organizational and data architecture necessary for marketing to drive growth for the business and collaborate with other functions and the skills needed to work well with other units of Pernod Ricard. Robert Moakler drilled down on what digital marketers need to know about the software engineering side of ad delivery, use of offsite signals, and ad measurement. Divya Kaur shared her expertise from KINESSO about need for cross-functional skills as they relate to creating a privacy compliant system for measurement of ad effects.
The other big theme was succeeding with marketing and measuring marketing in a privacy-first world. Isaac Dinner explained how data clean rooms allow much more extensive use of randomized experiments and quasi-experiments for incrementally testing at Indeed. His talk covered alternative causal methods for measuring marketing effects, a theme that was also present in Daniel McCarthy's brilliant talk about the methods developed with Shin Oblander to test the causal effects of systemic shocks, for example to measure what long term effects remain on consumption after habit change from COVID-19 .
The second day of the conference focussed squarely on succeeding in a privacy-first world. Liye Ma showed how much a marketer can infer from data in a single session of interaction, such as when a consumer speaks a sentence into Amazon Alexa. He highlighted that AI is particularly useful in filling in blanks from sparse and unstructured data. Malika Korganbekova gave a drop-the-mic rendition of her ambitious field experiment with a major online retailer. She assessed the causal effects of privacy-enhancing changes to data captured in Chrome and Safari browsers. These produced welfare losses for consumers, particularly price sensitive consumers with high search costs. Great setup to Abhi Gupta of Google and Garrett Johnson talking about the tools in the Google Privacy Sandbox and Garrett's work on adoption of those tools (just picking up) and how much they mitigate the business costs of cookie deprecation. Fascinating!
The 2024 #MSIANALYTICS Conference May 7-8 is underway! Hosted by University of Maryland and MSI this event features top marketing academics and industry leaders. Attendees are gaining important insights and tools to tackle common organizational challenges and future-proof their marketing strategies with data analytics. A heartfelt thank you to John Lynch, MSI's Executive Director from 2022-24, for his invaluable leadership. He will be greatly missed! #MarketingInsights#DataAnalytics 📊✨
