The upcoming African Food Systems Forum in September 2024 will focus on the transformative work happening across Africa’s food systems. One of the impactful projects highlighted during the event will be the Developing Inclusive Grain Value Chains in #Nigeria (DIGVCN). This project, a collaboration between IDH, Nestlé, and TechnoServe, has significantly improved the livelihoods of over 22,000 smallholder farmers by providing essential training, facilitating access to finance, and enhancing market opportunities. With achievements like €7.7 million in input credit, the creation of over 262,000 jobs, and the widespread adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, the project has made strides in strengthening the grain value chain and fostering economic growth. The Forum will offer an opportunity to delve into these successes, exploring how similar approaches can be scaled and adapted across different regions to build a more resilient and inclusive food system throughout Africa. This year is shaping up to be an exciting and transformative one for the agri-food sector. With the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) leading the charge on the '4 betters' approach—focusing on sustainable production, health, environmental stewardship, and holistic living—we at the World Food Forum Ghana are inspired to bring these principles to life right here in Ghana. Our mission is to bridge the gap from grassroots initiatives to national impact through the institutionalization of Regional Focal Persons for all the sixteen regions of Ghana. These focal persons will take up this initiative right from the community, district, and regional levels. Agri-food systems encompass everything from our food environments and supply chains to consumer choices. All these elements are interconnected through the '4 betters' framework, which emphasizes the resilience of our food systems as a powerful strategy against food insecurity in our country. This year, we are committed to advancing the agri-food systems agenda by forging strong partnerships with both the private and public sectors. Together, we can turn this vision into reality and create a brighter future for Ghana. World Food Forum FAO

As Namibia makes significant strides towards achieving food security, a crucial aspect for focus is the value addition of agricultural commodities. With high post harvest losses and substantial imports of value added commodities, it's a great time to emphasize value addition and food processing. Key benefits include: • Diversified food options • Enhanced taste • Increased profitability • Improved competition and food quality • Extended shelf life, reducing post-harvest losses • Greater environmental sustainability and food security • Strengthened local food production, subsequently reducing the reliance on imports • Support for local products resulting in job creation, and improved livelihoods The benefits are endless but at the core of it is a nation that secures it's food supply and drives it's own food value chain. Food for thought. #foodscience #foodsecurity #valueaddition

Driving Agricultural Innovation Across Africa: CLOSA Project Participates in US-Nigeria Roundtable on Food Security and Safety. As part of our commitment to fostering sustainable private sector growth in Africa's agricultural ecosystem, the CLOSA project team participated in the US-Nigeria Roundtable Conference on Food Security and Safety, hosted by the Pan African Association of Small and Medium Industries (PAOSMI). Held in Abuja, the conference provided a platform to explore business opportunities and share insights on food security and safety from both Nigerian and U.S. perspectives. Themed "Experiential Learning and Business Opportunities in Food Security and Safety: The Nigerian and U.S. Experiences," the event attracted a wide range of stakeholders, including professors, policymakers, and agricultural experts. Discussions focused on critical challenges such as mechanization, value addition, AI, technology, storage, and climate adaptation. Through syndicate sessions, participants identified actionable strategies to address these pressing issues in the agricultural sector. Going forward, CLOSA project will work with PAOSMI - Powered by Value Addition, Innovation and Sustainability of SMIs in Africa and other partners to synthesize the key takeaways from this conference, advocating for modernized agricultural practices and improved food safety standards to boost food security across Africa. Funded by USAID, the CLOSA project aims to build a strong, multi-country knowledge base, promoting adaptive learning and sustainable practices among private sector associations in Senegal, Nigeria, and Ghana.
