Leaders worth following will listen, learn, and seek to understand. Empathy isn’t a given, it’s a discipline. ---- Reggie Joiner joined Adam and I on the How to Lead podcast to discuss how we can learn from working with different generations, people we don’t like, and those we disagree with. The main takeaway for me from this conversation was this insight from Reggie: “The powerful thing, generationally in any organization, is not simply understanding the different generations (Gen Z/Alpha), it’s understanding that the individual sitting across the table has their story, their experiences, the things they’ve wrestled with and learning to acknowledge why they see something that someone else doesn’t see.” In other words, we have the ability to change entire organizations when our empathy toward others is intentionally developed. Suspending your own opinions, thoughts, and beliefs so you can seek to understand someone else’s experience (no matter their age) is how we grow. What's the most effective way you've found to connect with people in a different generation (older or younger)? I'll link to the episode in the comments below.

To say that I am excited to attend Clay's course on leadership and influence is an understatement. As Clay states: Empathy isn't a given, it's a discipline. And intentional empathy is something that leaders should strive to develop and apply, because when applied intentionally and appropriately, it has the potential to positively change an entire organization. Now that's powerful! Thank you FFB Bank for this amazing development opportunity! Can't attend a course or tune in to Clay's podcast? Pick up his book and add some leadership and influence tools to your skillset.

Feedback shouldn’t be a once-a-year event. It should be an ongoing conversation. 🗣️ If your team is surprised by their performance review, it means there’s been a gap in communication. Regular feedback helps guide and support your team, ensuring they always know where they stand and how they can improve. 🎯 Think about it—how often are you checking in with your team? Are you creating an environment where feedback is continuous and constructive? 💬🔄 For more content on this topic, listen to episode 32 of the Leadership Jam Session Podcast - Jam Session Scenarios: Performance Reviews with Ted Cowles, Dean DiGiacomo, and Matt Melloy https://loom.ly/8Nl8Ey0 #LeadershipDevelopment #ContinuousFeedback #PerformanceManagement #TeamGrowth #EffectiveCommunication __________________ 👍 Like this post if you found it helpful, and don't forget to comment your thoughts below! ♻️ Feel free to share this if you think others will find it useful too.

I'm someone who learns best from mistakes: my own and stories of others' mistakes. Especially when it comes to leadership, these kinds of lessons can be hard to come by. Making mistakes of your own is costly. In general, leaders can be buttoned-up about professional "breaking changes" and difficult lessons, especially when others have been impacted. My goal for this season of Postman's "Breaking Changes" podcast, which I hosted, was to assemble a group of people who could provide raw, unfiltered insights they've learned in their careers as leaders in the software industry. I'm super grateful to Mitchell Hashimoto, Will Larson, Gwen (Chen) Shapira, Steven Sinofsky, Albert Strasheim, Becky Weiss, David Fowler, Tido Carriero, Charity Majors, David Cramer, Cliff Chang, and Nick Schrock for opening up about their experiences.
