Today, we want to spotlight a group of sites that commemorate the struggle for human rights, liberation, and reconciliation, inspired by the legacy of Nelson Mandela. 🏛️ Union Buildings (Pretoria): A symbol of political change in South Africa, these buildings represent the transition from apartheid to a modern democracy. 🔔 Sharpeville Sites: A poignant reminder of the 1960 massacre where 69 individuals lost their lives protesting against the unjust pass laws of apartheid. 🌟 The Great Place at Mqhekezweni: This site honors Mandela’s connection with traditional leadership and its influence on his life principles. These locations form part of a group of fourteen sites that not only narrate the resistance against oppression but also embody Mandela’s values of understanding and reconciliation. Each site offers a unique glimpse into the struggle for justice and the progress towards a more equitable South Africa. 🔗 How do these sites inspire us to continue working towards a more just and inclusive future? Sudan is a country rich in both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The tangible heritage includes remarkable sites like the Meroe Pyramids, ancient ruins of the Kingdom of Kush, and the historic city of Suakin. These sites offer invaluable insights into Sudan’s ancient civilizations and their contributions to human history. Equally important is Sudan’s intangible heritage, which encompasses traditional music, dance, folklore, rituals, and crafts passed down through generations. This living heritage includes practices like the Zar ritual, Nubian oral traditions, and the craftsmanship of traditional Sudanese pottery and weaving. However, the ongoing conflict threatens these cultural treasures. Many historic sites have been damaged, and the transmission of intangible cultural practices is at risk as communities are displaced. Protecting both the tangible and intangible heritage of Sudan is crucial for preserving the country's identity and history. International cooperation and resources are essential to safeguard these irreplaceable assets and support the resilience of Sudanese communities. Let’s unite to preserve Sudan’s rich cultural legacy for future generations. #SudanHeritage #TangibleHeritage #IntangibleHeritage #CulturalPreservation #ProtectHeritage #SaveOurHistory #SudanCulture #GlobalSupport 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gdpUwSiJ

Turkey has converted the ancient Byzantine church, Chora (Kariye), into a mosque. This historic building, which was originally built in the 6th century, has undergone significant restoration work and has now been officially opened as a mosque by President Erdogan. The conversion of Chora into a mosque has sparked controversy among some religious groups and cultural heritage organizations, who argue that the building's rich history and cultural significance are being erased. Despite the controversy, the Turkish government has pushed forward with the conversion, citing the building's original purpose as a mosque during the Ottoman Empire. President Erdogan has hailed the restoration and conversion as a triumph, stating that it represents a return to the building's "true identity". The newly opened mosque is expected to become a major tourist attraction and a symbol of Turkey's rich cultural heritage. . . . #Turkey #ChoraChurch #MosqueConversion #CulturalHeritage #MosqueOpening #TribuneTrends

The presence of a Sphinx in the Balochistan province of Pakistan is perplexing, as no records exists for the civilization which would have built the Sphinx of Giza ever reached this region. Is the Sphinx of Balochistan a natural wonder, or the remnant of an ancient civilization? If man-made, its erosion suggests a very ancient origin. Could the civilization that carved the Sphinx of Giza have migrated to Pakistan, driven by rising seas and desertification? This remains an intriguing possibility.

Read the 30th issue of our Substack on state-level regulations in India. Cities in India are facing a dilemma—responding to the needs of urbanisation while protecting nationally important monuments. Our researchers, Bhuvana Anand, Shaunak Desai, and Shubho Roy analyse the 2010 amendment to the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act. As a result of this amendment, the researchers find that there are 3,695 zones in India where building anything is a 21-question obstacle course.
