Overdue post from this year's Student Leadership Conference. We headed over to Athens as the largest participating group to attend an event filled with many meaningful talks and activities. Some members found the talks useful, and some not so much (I prefer to be honest about how I feel); however, it was a day full of growth for everyone in one way or another. One thing that became crystal clear to me that day was the determination and dedication of my team to contribute toward our mission. Shout out to Georgia State University Sports Management Program for inviting me to speak to their Sports Leadership class this week. It was a great group of rising stars. I asked them to get on their screens so I could see their faces. Had to make sure they understood that one day they may reach out for a job and this was their first introduction. I love #leadershipdevelopment. As an executive leader, I’m intentional to give back and be the person you don’t see or have access to on the journey for someone else. As leaders, you have to commit yourself to connecting, advancing your knowledge, skills, and expertise. Our pursuit of creating “elite” athletes might be doing quite the opposite… We may just be incentivizing being good enough in order to chase the next opportunity. Without the love of the sport, the drive and willingness to overcome whatever stands in the way, there will be no “elite”. Development comes long before the pursuit of elite.
