The challenge of enteric methane emissions from beef & dairy cattle is complex. As a result, we need innovative and interdisciplinary research like this to advance our understanding of enteric methane emissions and inform the development of interventions that provide dairy & beef producers with safe, practical options to reduce enteric methane emissions.

Scientists develop rapid gene-screening platform to boost disease resistance in crops - by CSIRO More information: Taj Arndell et al, Pooled effector library screening in protoplasts rapidly identifies novel Avr genes, Nature Plants (2024). DOI: 10.1038/s41477-024-01641-y Abstract Crop breeding for durable disease resistance is challenging due to the rapid evolution of pathogen virulence. While progress in resistance (R) gene cloning and stacking has accelerated in recent years1,2,3, the identification of corresponding avirulence (Avr) genes in many pathogens is hampered by the lack of high-throughput screening options. To address this technology gap, we developed a platform for pooled library screening in plant protoplasts to allow rapid identification of interacting R–Avr pairs. We validated this platform by isolating known and novel Avr genes from wheat stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici) after screening a designed library of putative effectors against individual R genes. Rapid Avr gene identification provides molecular tools to understand and track pathogen virulence evolution via genotype surveillance, which in turn will lead to optimized R gene stacking and deployment strategies. This platform should be broadly applicable to many crop pathogens and could potentially be adapted for screening genes involved in other protoplast-selectable traits.

Plant breeding is the science and art of manipulating plant genetics to produce new and improved varieties with desired traits. It involves controlled mating and selection of plants to create offspring with specific characteristics such as higher yield, disease resistance, tolerance to environmental stresses, improved nutritional content, or better adaptation to particular growing conditions. Plant breeding methods include traditional breeding techniques such as selective breeding, hybridization, and mutation breeding, as well as modern biotechnological approaches like molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genetic engineering. The ultimate goal of plant breeding is to develop cultivars that meet the needs of farmers, consumers, and the environment, contributing to food security, agricultural sustainability, and economic prosperity. By continually improving crop varieties, plant breeders play a critical role in addressing global challenges such as population growth, climate change, and resource limitations. Extracting useful information from milk MIR spectrometry for dairy herd management and genetics is a fast-growing field. The usual practice is to link milk spectral information with reference values for the trait under study, generated using chemical or other reference methods. However, many of these reference data (methane, ingestion, etc.), the fruit of past research, lie dormant in drawers because they are not linked to the spectral data. Would it therefore be possible to insert them into training sets to develop MIR prediction equations by attempting to estimate the missing spectrum from our massive databases of spectral data created by DHI organizations ? Researchers have long hoped that the relative ease and low cost of CRISPR gene-editing systems would make it possible for scientists in low- and middle-income countries to produce crops with traits tailored to the needs of local farmers — rather than relying on seeds developed in foreign countries. Now scientists are overseeing at least a dozen efforts to develop such gene-edited crops. African livestock are also being edited.
