Navigating the Challenges of Digital Ethnography with Indian Consumers Digital ethnography offers great potential, but onboarding Indian respondents presents unique challenges that can differ significantly from Western contexts. Here are a few key hurdles: Email Issues: Email invitations often face issues such as mismatched IDs or ending up in spam or the recycle bin, causing delays and missed opportunities for engagement. Engagement Gaps: Once participants complete a task, they may overlook follow-up questions from facilitators or moderators, impacting the depth of insights. Platform Preferences: In India, WhatsApp emerges as a superior platform for digital ethnography. It offers a more personalized, one-on-one interaction that feels private and less formal compared to public forums. Additionally, it allows for faster clarification from facilitators. In my experience working with platforms like Inkling, Reflective, Recollective, and QualZ Board, adapting to these preferences and challenges is crucial for successful research. From 15-year-olds to 70-year-olds, everyone set the stage on fire. TEDx Gateway never fails to surprise me. Even after four years, this year was a pleasant surprise too. I was really impressed by the array of speakers and performers. They represented a mix of all ages, with talks, ideas, poetry, music recitals, and singing, presented in both Hindi and English. This time, there were more Indian speakers than foreigners. Two talks that resonated with me the most: --> The first was by a youth who, after languishing in Tihar jail for five years, is now helping rehabilitate former prisoners by providing employment opportunities to prevent them from gravitating towards crime. --> The second talk was about supporting female workers in the salt pans of Rajasthan to empower themselves. What makes this event so special? 1. Different Perspectives: TEDx Gateway has speakers of all ages, giving us many different ideas and experiences to think about. 2. Strong Women: Women and speakers of all ages share their stories, showing us that anyone can have good ideas and make a difference. 3. Mixing Art and Ideas: At TEDx Gateway, you can enjoy a mix of talking, music, and dance, which helps us think in new and creative ways. ‘𝑰𝒔𝒔 𝒔𝒂𝒎𝒖𝒅𝒂𝒂𝒚𝒆 𝒌𝒂 𝒛𝒂𝒃𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊 𝒌𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒚𝒂 𝒋𝒂 𝒓𝒉𝒂 𝒉𝒂𝒊 𝒑𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒏’  - said a popular news channel’s headline.   But, if we only stick to one source, are we really seeing the full picture?   Truth is complex. The information relayed as truth from one channel may not be as complex to cover it in entirety. In a single story, we are exposed to information that is presented by people with a singular lens and biases. They adopt one viewing point and use it to promote information by gift wrapping it in the guise of fact.   ‘Single stories’ limit us from engaging with information more deeply to truly understand the story and all its complexities. Maybe this is why we have multiple news channels; all of them giving us their version of truth by analysing specific parts of the story or information.   Sticking to one narrative – does that make us true storytellers, or just a mouthpiece for a specific ideology?   An every day example of how we recognise and make use of multiple viewing points nd understand a story in all its colours – arriving at our TRUTHs is, how most of our opinions get formed these days and where are we imbibing our knowledge from.   It is happening through multiple channels of information: social media, the internet in general news channels, papers, books and of course the good old family WhatsApp group chats.   We call this a ‘𝐏𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲’.   Essentially, ones that encourage pluralistic perspectives, opinions and collectively create a vibrant, harmonious, holistic and inclusive story, taking everyone’s outlook into consideration.   Holding such plutories simultaneously - which might also be opposing or paradoxical - helps communities to move beyond linear ways to look at truths and celebrate diversity, recognise the importance of collective contribution and promote empathy and harmony.   During #SamjhoToh - our program that brings together, diverse young people who might have opposing points of views – we facilitate safe spaces where they learn the art of asking the right questions and are equipped with instruments to get to the crux of the stories that are told to them!   They learn to produce and promote all-encompassing plutories that helps them really understand where the others are coming from and get closer to recognising complex truths.   Thus, paving the way for harmonious communities! One thing I have loved about work all these years is the chance to meet, interact with, and learn from very interesting people. And all "friends". One such incredible person is sandeep dutta from Kantar. Mr. Dutta (or Dada as I call him) and I over the last one year have become this time's "pen pals". We exchange e-mails and texts discussing culture, cinema, music, travel etc. It's a pleasure! And sometimes, Dada authors an article or two for WARC. Like the last time when he contributed to Spotlight India on Gen Z. I know it's a topic he finds extremely interesting. Dada makes some accurate observations in his Spotlight article talking about the generation's anxieties and aspirations. Since the edition went live, he has continued to share interesting articles and videos with me further illustrating his insights. One that I particularly found interesting was a short video featuring a young adult talking about his need to turn to spirituality, something Dada talks about in detail in his article. Another article he shared with me today tells me how Gen Z is becoming increasingly less happy than the older generations.
