Sharing a short video of the course content for the upcoming Public Sector, Policy and Political Communications Course coming up online Thursday July 18, 2024. Over the past few weeks, I have been researching into political communication systems and models (of which there are quite a few online) although most are out-dated. What came across almost immediately is how this space is changing drammatically. While the political systems in sub-Saharan Africa have not changed significantly in the past 20 years, the political communication ecosystem is changing at a much faster pace than the systems itself (due to interest from new segments - mostly citizen-based who are beginning to assert themselves as a strong and credible voice). In some countries (like Nigeria) the power balance is currently still in favour of the traditional political system structures but for countries like Kenya, that power balance is tilting towards a structure that allows for or responds to strong interest and involvement from the citizen. This process will require a complete upheaval of the existing political communication systems to allow for more engagement with the citizenry and this is where strategic communication comes in. The situation in Kenya is a classic case of the failure of political leadership and inadequacy of policy communication processes. The inability to foresee the associated policy implementation risks and to have put in place an inclusive communication and engagement process to address issues before implementation. The inability to manage and peacefully de-escalate the crisis is also a failure of crisis leadership. The Kenya crisis is a text book case for the importance of effective citizen communication and engagement in policy implementation, public administration and political leadership. Yesterday, President Ruto fired majority of his cabinet because it had become clear that they had lost the confidence of the people, and lacked the skills and capability to THINK beyond the traditional brute force and divide-and-rule tactics (that is the default approach for countries like Nigeria). https://lnkd.in/e7Nxdm2Z Time will tell whether this trend is replicated in other #African countries but I see a progressive trend of citizens doing more of the following: - Inserting themselves into conversations around the political system and leadership. - Holding public sector officials to account - Scrutinizing public expenditure and asking for more clarity on issues. - Taking active interest in implementation of public policies that affect their quality of life The question I would ask anyone working in the public sector or political communication space is: For how much longer will the old-school, top-down, divisive communication approach work? What would it take to become more strategic and inclusive in communication and stakeholder management? https://lnkd.in/eUhtSJ64
