Sitting too much is making us sick! The World Health Organization says over 80% of kids and 27.5% of adults around the world aren't active enough. With inactivity rising by 5% between 2010 and 2022 and projected to increase to 35% by 2030. Many people aren't moving enough. This is causing lots of health issues! As an industry, we can make a big difference! Here are some ways to help: Create fun programs: Offer exciting and enjoyable classes to get people moving. Inclusive activities: Make sure everyone feels welcome, no matter their age or fitness level. Promote walking and cycling: Encourage walking or cycling to the gym to add more activity to daily routines. Partner with local schools: Help kids get active by working with schools to promote fitness. Together, we can help everyone be healthier and happier. Should a gym membership be an aspect of your health and wellness program? Maybe... Maybe not.... Just hear me out on this one. Imagine most of your employees are single moms with no kids who wouldn't have time to get to the gym. Or, maybe most (or even some) of your staff dislike or are intimidated by the thought of going to the gym. It wouldn't be beneficial for your staff, would it? So, in this case, having a gym membership as part of your health and wellness program is not beneficial. Don't get me wrong, I love the gym and think weight or resistance training is very beneficial, but you need to meet your staff where they are. Perhaps they prefer yoga, or walking, or team sports. Here's another example. Team sports are very beneficial, but I can't stand them, so having that as an activity or perk would not resonate with me. Even though it has a community aspect, it is something that I just would not participate in, so I wouldn't get any benefit from it. But if you gamified something, I'd be all over it! The moral of the story is to involve your staff, find out what would and wouldn't work for them, and use that information when you are supporting your health and wellness policies and procedures. #HR #Peopleandculture #CorporateWellnessProgram
