Interesting, and this is good to see. But in so many ways not surprising. And sadly too many leaders, counsellors, managers, coaches, and therapists fail to apply. Whether it be the principles of FLOW state (Csikszentmihalyi), or the use of PERMA (Seligman) , or the studies of happiness (Haidt), and the benefits of slowing down and detoxing towards our deep work (Newport) - or even, the constructive psychology with hints of Buddhism (Morita) - the fundamental elements always were, are and will be consistent. Focusing on the physical world, find interests with others, and challenges outside of our stressors, is the source of resilience and renewal. Turn off the screen, change your physical view point, do something physical and engage in something new, to challenge your intellect.
9 out of 10 Australians support the prescribing of social and creative practice by Doctors as part of treating a range of health issues, according to Creative Australia in their report Creating Wellbeing (2023). A groundbreaking study from Christina Davies has found that 2 hours of engaging with art (seeing it, experiencing it, making it) a week improves your overall health! There has never been more evidence that art and creativity is good for us. We've actually always known this, as humans, but in the Serious Business of medicine and managing health, it's been forgotten. We are grateful to work with GPs like Dr Mark Melek from The Village Practice in Wollongong who routinely prescribes patients ocean swimming, nature connection and referral to MakeShift programs as part of his prescribing. Every single person can support the inclusion of art and creativity engagement in their life. It might start with giving yourself permission to experience and enjoy music, photography, art, dance or books as a way to shift how you feel!
