IAA TRANSPORTATION 2024 in Hanover marked a significant milestone in the electrification of commercial and industrial vehicles. For Proterra, this year’s event highlighted the accelerating momentum toward electric transportation, showcasing groundbreaking innovations and the transformative role electrification is playing in the future of mobility. This week, we've been navigating the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene, which swept through South Carolina. Many of our team members in Upstate South Carolina have faced power and water outages, along with damage to their homes and vehicles.   Proterra’s manufacturing facility in Greer, South Carolina, remains without power. However, our dedicated team has been on the ground, working closely with utility companies, addressing minor damages, sanitizing the facility, and working tirelessly to get operations back up and running. They’re preparing for a safe and efficient return to full operations as soon as conditions allow.   It has been truly inspiring to witness our community come together in this time of need. We are incredibly grateful for everyone’s safety and resilience, and our thoughts are with all those affected by the storm.

Yesterday at MOVE America 2024, our Vice President of Supply Chain, Regina Lopez, MBA, CPM, joined a panel on Supply Chain and Raw Materials. Meet Justin Lui, Cell Engineering Manager at Proterra! - Tell us about your background and where did you grow up? I was born and raised in the Bay Area! Starting in high school, I have had a large interest in alternative energy, which led me to majoring in Materials Engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. How long have you been at Proterra? I joined Proterra in January 2023 after 7 and a half years at Lucid Motors, where I scaled up their cell testing operations and developed their battery technology for Formula E and Lucid Air vehicles. What do you enjoy most about your role at Proterra? What I enjoy most about my role at Proterra is working on the electrification of commercial vehicles, particularly class 8 vehicles. It’s a challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience to be at the forefront of such cutting-edge technology. Additionally, collaborating with our talented and diverse teams to push the boundaries of this industry is both inspiring and motivating. Together, we’re making significant strides in advancing sustainable transportation. What is the most challenging part of your role at Proterra? Commercial vehicles are typically used much more rigorously than passenger vehicles - our team needs to validate the lifetime of our cells 3 times or more than that of passenger vehicles. One of the biggest challenges for our team is striking a balance between accelerated life testing and realistic use cases to ensure that unrealistic degradation mechanisms aren't introduced, while also speeding up test time. What motivated you to join the clean transportation industry? After watching and contributing to the amazing progress of the electrification of passenger vehicles, I saw a huge potential in the electrification of commercial vehicles to improve our air quality and other environmental factors. What is your favorite thing to do outside of work? I enjoy spending time with my family and discovering new experiences in the Bay Area with my wife and 2 year old toddler. I also enjoy tinkering with self-hosting projects and home automations.
