Mother MUAC training is the most practical and scalable means to detect acute malnutrition at the community level, through the measurement and classification of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). Involving mothers and caregivers in MUAC screening enables them to develop a better understanding of the signs of malnutrition, engage in monitoring their children's nutrition status, and increase the frequency of child screening at the community level. #GHIV Africa presents evidence of this initiative by continuously training and distributing MUAC tapes to caregivers, ensuring every child is first screened at home and referred to the facility for treatment. #GHIVAfrica #UNICEF #Nutritionsectornigeria

#MHClimateActionProgram conducted a series of informative sessions in multiple villages across Hafizabad, Pakistan. These sessions were aimed at enlightening communities about essential health and hygiene principles. By providing valuable knowledge and raising awareness, Muslim Hands played a crucial role in promoting the well-being of these communities. #Healthhygiene are fundamental aspects of human life. However, in many rural areas, access to proper healthcare and knowledge about hygiene practices is limited. Community members were educated about the importance of handwashing, proper sanitation practices, and the prevention of common diseases. They were also provided with information on nutrition and the significance of a balanced diet for overall well-being. These sessions were conducted in a participatory manner, allowing community members to actively engage and ask questions, ensuring a better understanding of the topics. One of the key strengths of Muslim Hands Pakistan' approach was their focus on community involvement. By conducting these sessions in the villages themselves, they were able to reach a larger number of people and make the information more accessible. This approach also fostered a sense of ownership among community members, empowering them to take charge of their own health and They also distributed hygiene kits to the communities, which included essentials such as soap, toothbrushes, and sanitary napkins. This practical support complemented the knowledge shared during the sessions, enabling community members to immediately implement the learned practices in their daily lives. The impact of Muslim Hands' initiative was evident in the positive response from the communities. People expressed gratitude for the valuable information they received and the practical support provided. Many community members reported improvements in their health and hygiene practices, which in turn led to a decrease in the incidence of common illnesses. “The World Health Organization (WHO) has published global cholera statistics for 2023, showing an increase in cases and deaths. The number of reported cholera cases increased by 13% and deaths by 71% in 2023 compared to 2022. Over 4000 people died last year from a disease that is preventable and easily treatable.”   MY TAKE The rise in cholera cases underscores a critical lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. Despite control efforts, the ongoing scarcity of safe drinking water perpetuates the spread of the disease. The number of admissions to the Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centre in El-Geneina Teaching Hospital, supported by MSF, has doubled from January to April 2024. Initially, the hospital had 20 beds; this number was increased to 34 in mid-March, and subsequently to 50 beds in April 2024. In response to malnutrition increase, MSF launched community door to door screening for malnutrition in villages distant from El Geneina, where abandoned health facilities underscore the urgency for the population. In May 2024, MSF outreach team visited locations such as Jabal Moon, Sirba, Beida, Habila, and Fora Baranga, where they conducted nutritional screenings, treated severe malnutrition, assessed rural healthcare facilities, and distributed medical and nutritional supplies. In 2014, the Indian government launched the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission (SBM) aimed at improving public sanitation. By 2020, the program had constructed 100 million toilets across the country. In their recent paper published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, Suman Chakrabarti, Soyra Gune, Tim Bruckner, Julie Strominger, and Parvati Singh found a clear association in the 2014-2020 time frame between toilet construction under the SBM program and reduced infant and child mortality in India. The study estimated that every 10% increase in toilets built through SBM is associated with an estimated reduction of 0.9 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, which scales to 67,235 fewer infant deaths per year given SBM coverage levels across Indian districts. THE global medical fraternity unanimously agrees that providing pre-hospital care to patients can save many lives. In India’s state of Tamil Nadu, the 108 emergency transportation service, launched in 2008, has played an effective role in reducing infant mortality, and also saved the lives of 120,271 road accident victims through timely interventions. The response rate of Sri Lanka’s Suwa Seriya ambulance service is 12 minutes, which is the fastest in the world. The Rescue 1122 emergency service was launched in 2004 in our own province of Punjab. Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, has many ambulance services, but most, unfortunately, do not have the requisite facilities and equipment needed to administer pre-hospital treatment to patients. The first lifesaving ambulance on Karachi’s roads was seen courtesy of the Aman Foundation. In 2018, this foundation handed over its 60 lifesaving ambulances to the Sindh government, on the understanding that the provincial government would increase the number of lifesaving ambulances to 200 for Karachi. The Sindh chief minister reiterated on the floor of the assembly that his government would increase the size of the fleet in accordance with the requirements of the city.
