A big thank you to the #LSE for hosting an insightful event on sustainability reporting. Lots of great speakers sharing their expert opinions. One key takeaway for me was the importance of the relationship between the CSO and the CFO. Finance and sustainability teams each have skills that when combined can unlock synergies that will help businesses drive towards producing auditable ESG reports that comply with relevant reporting frameworks. #CFGIUK #CFGI #Sustainabilityreporting https://lnkd.in/eAaq2Six

On January 3rd, we proudly celebrate the 40th anniversary of the FTSE 100 index. As one of only 26 companies that have been in the index since its inception, RELX has not only stood the test of time but emerged as the best performing stock. With a valuation of £58bn, RELX is now the 9th largest company on the London market, surpassing the rest of the FTSE 100 media sector combined. Patrick Hosking in The Times writes: "RELX has produced the largest share market returns of the past four decades, according to a study of companies that were members of the FTSE 100 when it was launched exactly 40 years ago." In The Guardian, Nils Pratley writes: "The flyer in the pack, then is really RELX, possibly the quietly impressive performer among big UK-listed companies over the past 20 years." LinkedIn Top Voice #Nachhaltigkeit | Gründer & CEO von XU sustainable | Vorstand für Nachhaltigkeit und Entwicklung der FÜCHSE BERLIN
The NYSE is the world’s largest stock exchange – and has corresponding influence. What happens here echoes through the global economy. That can be dangerous, because a NYSE crash will make waves – like on the “Black Thursday” of October 1929. But it can also turn the stock exchange into a motor of progress. It is a place where impulses are generated that push all of us forward, a place where innovations that will shape our future are financed. The realm of sustainability is no exception. This issue of course touches every company listed on the NYSE, as well as NYSE itself as a company. Those responsible understand this, and they have set ambitious goals for themselves. What impresses me most: The NYSE understands how much influence it has on the companies listed there – and it strives to take them along on its way to more sustainability. It thus offers support from its ESG Resource Center in the form of guidelines and best practices for reporting, information, events, and webinars, as well as entrepreneurial boot camps. The stock exchange collects and publishes sustainability data to contribute to more transparency regarding ESG. It has also joined the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative (#SSE), a global group that works to align capital markets with sustainability goals like the UN SDGs the world over. And NYSE especially focuses on its strength as a marketplace: mutual exchange. It enables companies to network, learn from each other, and improve together. The NYSE’s commitment to ESG is smart for two reasons: one, ESG helps society by ensuring that we will be able to sustainably generate wealth while protecting our natural resources in the future. And two, ESG helps companies (and thus the stock exchanges where they are listed), because companies who are set up to be sustainability leaders are better prepared for future challenges – whether those come from lawmakers, from investors and customers, or from climate change impacts on global trade networks. A solid ESG strategy mitigates risks, ensures long-term company growth, and can open new market segments. Other stock exchanges know this as well. From Nasdaq to London Stock Exchange to the Swiss SIX Swiss Exchange to Deutsche Börse, more and more capital marketplaces take sustainability seriously, many of them joining SSE and offering resources and support to their listed companies. This is important. Without capital markets, the sustainability transformation will not work. But if stock exchanges lead the way, especially a giant like the NYSE, a movement will form whose momentum can carry all of us into the future. #Sustainability #ClimateChange #StockMarket #Transparency #SustainableStockExchangesInitiative

He writes: “The message here is simple. Companies that do right by their various stakeholders also do better in the market. It may be the least understood, most mis-portrayed, best kept secret on Wall Street.” Below is a comparison of the JUST ETF results against the Enterprise Engagement Alliance’s six-year Engaged Company Stock Index study. Managed by McBassi & Company and sponsored by EGR International Inc. , this mock ETF based on companies with high levels of customer, employee, and community engagement outperformed the S&P 500 by 37.1% over six years. Interesting article if only as a counterpoint to most of what is posted on this site. I think the telegraph allows a few free reads if you register. You may totally disagree but it’s worth seeing a different point of view to the ESG consensus.
Why have British stocks gone nowhere for years? Because we turned our backs on capitalism

Sustainability Director at Ever, part of Design Portfolio, leading the sustainability strategy consulting team.
Cheers Julie Wilford! Not me coming back to a fabulously changed sustainability landscape after my parental leave. Good thing I kept my eye on the news (and the Official Journal of the European Union 😉 ) as 2023 was a year of change and revolution. Top three things I’ve been talking about since my return: 1. Double materiality. We’ve been doing this for years here at Ever Sustainable and in line with the CSRD’s approach including the IIRC’s 6 capitals framework. This is one of my favourite pieces of work to undertake for clients and we’ll be sharing a lot of information about our approach over the next few weeks – keep an eye on Ever Sustainable's posts. 2. CFD and TCFD. Have you been relying on comply OR explain for climate risk and opportunity? It’s time to get yourself a disclosure that can do both and report under CFD as well as TCFD. We’ve got a lovely new creds deck to explain what we do on risk and opportunity assessment, scenario analysis and disclosure – ask me or Kyle Laing to send you a copy. 3. Quantification of the ‘S’ – getting authentic and interesting numbers on social activities and factors, from culture to human rights – we are having conversations about how to usefully and sensitively collect and manage social data. It’s something I spoke about on the webinar with the London Stock Exchange Group (listen here - https://rb.gy/3ftsc3) as well as with Amy Smith and would love to speak with you about too. Shout out to my Ever sisters (and now official Ever alumni Danielle Bistacchi and Lindsay Davis) who have gone on to big and bright things, and to my wonderful new team members Marigold Melton, Kyle Laing, Kirsten W., Claudia Telling Stephen Alexander PIEMA, Andy Croft and Amanpreet N. – it’s going to be a big year!

With Easter just around the corner and as we work through the wild and wonderful reporting season, it is a good time to take stock! From an Ever Sustainable point of view a lovely piece of news is the return of Martha McPherson to the team from her parental leave, and for the wider team it has been an amazing month of new connections within the sustainability community. Andy Croft and Stephen Alexander PIEMA have been out and about at the Global Sustainability Partnership Network (GSPN) and edie conferences discussing current key issues including scope 3 emissions, managing sustainable supply chains responsibly and the ‘S’ of ESG – getting social data right. We also had Martha McPherson jump straight back into it appearing on the London Stock Exchange's webinar discussing how to build a long-term sustainable culture and company, and it was great to see the level of debate and interest around this topic from so many different industries and personalities. Link here https://lnkd.in/dfWBd7md If any of those topics resonate with you, it would be great to connect and speak in more detail – hope everyone enjoys the long bank holiday weekend for Easter! #newconnections #sustainabilitymatters
