Those who wish to donate to Habitat’s response to Hurricane Helene can do so at https://lnkd.in/ek6bC86X. Habitat for Humanity International is currently collecting reports of damage from local Habitat organizations in roughly 150 communities across eight states. (The other five states impacted by Helene are: South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.) Teams on the ground will continue to survey the destruction in the coming days as they navigate widespread power, water and gas shortages. Habitat’s role will primarily be in the long-term recovery of disaster-stricken communities, following the immediate response. Long-term recovery is among the greatest challenges in disaster response and recovery, particularly as communities work to ensure the lower-income populations that Habitat serves are not left behind. The catastrophic destruction and devastation caused by the LA Wildfires is incomprehensible. Right now, immediate relief to help contain the fires and support the tens of thousands displaced is paramount. In the weeks, months, and years to come, sustained, community-based recovery efforts will be needed to revitalize and rebuild the LA community. While the damage of Hurricane Helen is still being assessed, we as Carolina Community from our SERVPRO Team Starritt want to share ways you can help from areas far and wide. 1- Donate to Non-Profit Organizations // Organizations such as the AARP Foundation are gathering funds to ensure that all of the profits go to the relief and support of those impacted by hurricane damage. 2-Volunteer your Time //  If you live within an area where you can ideally travel to damaged sites, register under a disaster relief organization to give your time to efforts needing assistance such as tree removal, donated goods organizations, debris cleanup, etc.  You can sign up at redcross.org, justserve.com, and at nc.gov/volunteernc. Important to note: Do not just show up to the communities impacted without registering through an organization. They are limited to resources and it takes careful planning and consideration to direct the efforts of volunteers effectively. 3 - Send Resources // Even with the very generous efforts of our amazing Carolina communities, the need for resources is still ongoing and has been deemed very limited. Through the same and similar organizations listed above, find items that are needed and register to drop them off at an organization's pick-up zone. 4 - Stay up-to-date // While you may not be experiencing any damage or effects from the storm, it does not mean that the issues and needs of those who were are immediately cared for. Do your best to stay informed and up-to-date with the needs of the communities and areas impacted. Doing so will help them stay updated with the resources they need to recover. As a company headquartered in North Carolina, we are heartbroken by the historic devastation of our western counties by Hurricane Helene. Despite heroic efforts by first responders, the National Guard, utility crews and relief workers, the hardest hit communities still remain cut off, with gas, food, water, electricity and cellular service difficult if not impossible to obtain. Many communities in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida have also endured terrible destruction. While our sites were spared, we will all know colleagues, friends, family, neighbors and clients who are impacted. In the face of such a disaster and suffering, it’s hard to know the best course of action and support. But by pulling together, we can make a difference. We urge you to consider joining Alcami in donating to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund to help our neighbors in their long recovery. In Western NC, the restoration of power, cell service, some grocery stores, gas stations, and major road infrastructure has greatly helped the situation. That being said, there are still those who have lost their homes, property, vehicles, road access, and—in the worst cases—loved ones. In these cases, rebuilding can feel insurmountable. A group of phenomenal people local to the area (who I am proud to call friends, mentors, and family) started helping their community immediately. At the time, focused on distributing crucial aid, search and rescue, and using any resources they could muster to mitigate the severity of the disaster. Before long, they had people and resources pouring in to the cause. It has now evolved into the Appalachian Rebuild Project, operating in conjunction with Vets to Drones, a 501(c)(3) that has been an unbelievable blessing to the area. The goal is to move beyond supply distribution and other immediate or well-met needs. They are directly funneling volunteers, money, and resources to projects such as: restoring a flood damaged church, building a bridge so an elderly couple has driveway access, rebuilding a well pump house that provides water for 3 families, and more. Even better—they are using LOCAL small businesses to execute a lot of these projects. Rebuilding a broken community and supporting the small businesses and their employees who have certainly taken a hit. I don’t ask this lightly…please consider donating using the link on this post.
