Balancing caregiving roles in medicine I want each of you listening, whether you're a hiring medical director or a colleague, to consider this: When someone is going through a rough time, be it related to a child or an ailing family member, women physicians often bear a significant part of the caregiving responsibilities. While it's true that some men also take on these roles, and I commend them for it, the reality is that women are frequently the primary caregivers, not just for their children, but for their partners, in-laws, and other family members. We need to understand these dynamics and strive for greater equity. This means creating environments where both women and men have the opportunity to be present and available for their families during challenging times. As the landscape regarding reproductive healthcare changes, and people's access to care is restricted, #ems caregivers are increasingly likely to see patients who are sicker (because they can't access care), managing their own care (same), and who may be reluctant to openly share their history and condition (because it has been criminalized in some places). In states where there aren't restrictions, we may see and care for individuals from other states who are seeking care and are sicker than we typically anticipate. This is mostly new, and rapidly changing. So, for #emseducators, how have you adjusted your training for this reality? What conversations are you having with students about what they may see? If you are in #continuingeducation, what discussions are you having with your caregivers? Not discussing this reality is doing our patients a disservice, and some may shy away from discussing it because it is perceived as political, which it isn't/shouldn't be, at least in this context. What are tips and best practices for having this conversation with the EMS workforce we're educating?

Health care is more than a solitary physician! Thank you to Anissa Durham for this series on health care disparities and outcomes in Black neighborhoods. Shonta Chambers, who leads our health equity work, said, "You can’t talk about the clinical elements of a patient’s health care experience without talking about those social drivers...Our path forward is really more about team-based care. The health care model involves more than just a physician. For example, it can include a financial navigator, social worker, nutritionist, and health navigators."
