August 24, 2023: Today is National Maryland Day! This day celebrates the seventh state to join the United States. Some fun facts about Maryland: ·      Maryland was named after the queen of England. ·      Including the islands that are part of Maryland’s territory, Maryland has 4,431 miles of tidal shoreline. ·      The official state sport of Maryland is jousting. ·      The state drink of Maryland is milk. ·      The first school in the United States, King William’s School, was built in Annapolis in 1696. The WMATA Branch Avenue Bridges in Suitland, Maryland, were designed to accommodate the project’s environmental permit conditions. The bridges pass through environmentally sensitive wetlands and over the busy Suitland Parkway carrying light rail commuters between Maryland’s suburban Branch Avenue Station and Washington D.C. Span-by-span construction of the precast concrete segmental superstructure from above minimized impacts to wetlands and parkway traffic below. The #historyenterprise includes structures like bridges. This was a historic bridge built in 1936. Considerations include both the historic fabric and public safety. Neither is intrinsically more important than the other but a nod more often goes to public safety. Sometimes solutions include saving the bridge as a part of our built heritage and constructing an alternate span and road realignment.

Interstate 30 is a heavily trafficked corridor that connects Little Rock, Arkansas, to Dallas, Texas. In Southwest Arkansas near the city of Arkadelphia, two aging bridges on this thoroughfare provided passage over the De Roche Creek. In 2017, the time had come for the crossings to be replaced due to almost continual repairs being needed. The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) and Michael Baker International utilized an innovative Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method known as a lateral slide to replace the existing structures. This was notably the first time that a lateral slide had been used in Arkansas. Under this method, the new bridge superstructures were constructed next to the existing bridges on temporary falsework. Once complete, the existing bridges were demolished, and the new bridges were slid into place. The new bridges now accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction, allowing more people and goods to pass over the creek and reducing delays, which can have economic benefits while also reducing emissions and travel times.
