Are the entry requirements for a new clinical data manager becoming more specific and more challenging than they used to be........ There has never been a more interesting time to work in clinical data management. The role has changed considerably over the last two decades and more so over the last few years. These changes have not only created a difference in the day-to-day tasks of a clinical data management, but have also created new roles and new career paths. These are great opportunities if you are already in a CDM role but what if you are looking to get into the industry. Have the entry requirements become more specific and more challenging? We asked this question in a recent ACDM LinkedIn Poll. The results were (N=142): Yes: 81% No: 19% It will be interesting to explore these results further. How have the criteria changed and is this consistent across regions and companies? 3:1 - Clinic to Data Engineer Ratio for Oak Street Health (OSH) Blake Madden's recent post that CVS is pouring money into OSH to open 50 de-novo clinics every year [1] motivated me. I became curious about how they are hiring to implement that strategy. So. I went to their career page. Luckily, they kindly put a search menu where I could check the number of open positions by category [2] (see below). In short, they are hiring 𝟮𝟳𝟳 providers, both doctors and NPs; these openings are a mix of existing and new clinics. However, if I assume the majority of these would be for the de-novo ones, 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝟱.𝟱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲. Two numbers that stood out are the 𝟱𝟵 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 and the 𝟭𝟳 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆. It seems to me that OSH plans to put at least one behavioral health and social worker per site. Also, if you look at the details, the open positions for the Information Technology category are mostly data engineers. If I follow the same logic, 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀. Data is a critical part of healthcare delivery operations now. We all wish the data engineering function to be a 𝙛𝙞𝙭𝙚𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩, but as far as I have seen in the market, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽. So, I am treating the data engineering function as a 𝙫𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩. The 3:1 ratio gives an interesting perspective, though. Many people ask me the right way to grow the data team. 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 (𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀. There is no correct answer, but this 3:1 ratio can be "𝗼𝗻𝗲" 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 if you think of growing the data operation part of the business. Are clinical data management roles in your company home-based……. COVID saw the move to home based working for a vast number of people. For many this was a temporary change, for others this became permanent. In a previous ACDM LinkedIn poll we asked what was the most important consideration when looking for a new job. Only 4% said location, and 22% said working conditions. Does the low percentage for location suggest it is not as relevant as it previously was as there are now more home based roles available? This prompted us to ask the question about home-working as last week’s Poll. Are clinical data management roles in your company home-based? (N=307) Yes - all are: 44% Yes - some are: 34% Yes but only a small number: 7% No: 15% Do these results surprise you? Are there country-specific differences? Are their sector-specific differences? This is something we will explore in the future. Robert King, Sverre Bengtsson, Nina Reyes, Ali Roskell, Angie Major, Stephanie Hau #clinicalresearch #clinicaltrials #clinicaldatamanagement #acdm

Sr. Global Data Manager at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine | Pharmacologist | Ex - Novartis | Ex - IQVIA | 10+ Years core Oncology Expertise
The Clinical Data Manager: Beyond Just Data Review: When most hear the title "Clinical Data Manager", their minds often jump to someone buried in excel sheets and Clinical databases, rigorously ensuring accuracy and completeness. And while that's a part of the picture, it's akin to seeing just the tip of an iceberg. The role, in its entirety, is a delicate blend of technical prowess, meticulous attention to detail, and leadership finesse. To many, data is just numbers and facts, black and white with no shades in between. But in the realm of clinical research, data tells a story—a story of patient journeys, of therapeutic breakthroughs, and sometimes, of the paths less traveled. Over nine enriching years in this domain, my initiation into this role began with the basic premise of reviewing data. It was a task-oriented start, where the immediate objective was to ensure consistency and accuracy. But as days transformed into years, I realized that being a Clinical Data Manager was not just about handling data but about understanding its very soul and purpose. Every drug trial, every patient cohort, every anomaly in data patterns taught me something new. From understanding the core sections of the protocol to discerning unobvious patterns during data review, my journey saw me evolve from being just a data reviewer to someone who viewed data as a canvas, ready to paint a coherent picture that would eventually contribute to medical advancements. It wasn't just the technical skills that were honed over time. The role demanded a constant interplay of soft skills—communication, negotiation, and above all, leadership. It was about ensuring that the data's story was told right, about guiding a team to see and interpret the story just as vividly, and about standing firm when data integrity was at stake. In essence, being a Clinical Data Manager is akin to being the guardian of a narrative, one that has the potential to revolutionize healthcare. It's a journey that's not just about numbers but about people, innovations, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. As we delve deeper into this series, I'll share more about the facets of this role and the myriad lessons I've garnered. Stay tuned. #ClinicalDataManagement #BeyondDataReview #MyJourney #30DayWritingChallenge #articles #linkedin #ClinicalResearch
