Trevor Cunningham, our environmental technician at Prairie Engineers, teamed up with Marina Osier, the Natural Resources Discipline Lead. Together, they were out to Milan, IL conducting Wetland Delineation as part of the Sear and Steel Safety Study on the Rock River. We are serving as a subcontractor to Hanson Professional Services Inc., in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. There, they assessed potential wetland sites by looking for hydrophytic vegetation, hydric soils, and signs of wetland hydrology. If a site checks all three boxes, it earns its spot on the map as an official wetland. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates on their exciting endeavors! #wetlands #safetystudy

Scott Perkins, Prairie's Business Development Director, attended MAPPS 2024 Summer Conference at Utah Olympic Park located in Park City, Utah. This event provides unique opportunities to meet, learn and discuss the latest developments impacting the geospatial industry. Here, you can see one of Prairie's Award-Winning project posters on display. This project showcased the precise topographic mapping achieved by Prairie Engineers for reclamation and development purposes. Technical Applications & Consulting (TAC) supported the project with LiDAR data acquisition. The team found that sUAS LiDAR is a cost-effective solution for mine land reclamation, proving its suitability for topographic mapping.

Near Hardin, Illinois, Casey Fry and Eric Duft were actively engaged in environmental restoration. They used a landing craft alongside a side-by-side vehicle to cross the river for an inspection of an island where trees had been planted in previous years. Collaborating with the US Army Corps of Engineers St Louis District Rivers Project Office and subcontractor DJM, they aimed to improve conditions for these young saplings. Their focus has been on restoring the area’s natural state by removing about 35% of less desirable species such as Boxelder, American Elm, Green Ash, and Silver Maple that had invaded over time. These efforts are vital for promoting growth and supporting native tree survival amidst environmental challenges.

Prairie Engineers is back on the water, with Land Surveyor Dennis Hill and Environmental Scientist Crystal Hudak. In collaboration with US Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District, they were seen near Elsbury and Pillsbury, MO, conducting dredge surveys to maintain the navigation lanes for barge traffic. They monitored river gages from the shore to ensure accuracy in their data collection. Stay updated on their aquatic adventures as they continue to explore new locations and make waves in their field. #surveying #IllinoisRiver
