Let's talk about #REMOTE #job postings for a minute.
First and foremost, I KNOW how difficult it is for #jobseekers right now. It's a tough market on top of a period of transition for many employers as they make decisions about returning to "normalcy" (office).
It's a little grey for everyone at the moment, so here's a PSA for the frustrated (and rightfully so) job seekers:
"REMOTE"... unfortunately, does not mean "from anywhere".
"Remote" means you don't have to be in a specific office location every day, but it does not mean that you can work wherever you want, whenever you want.
Companies may post a remote job and then have certain location requirements from there, and it may not be because they are just being controlling or misleading. Most of the time, this is because the company is not set up to employ and/or do business in certain states because of taxes, payroll, labor laws, benefits, compliance, security, governance, etc., and having just one employee in a new state will impact the business in a way that they may not be able to (or choose to) accommodate. This can even apply to current employees who request to temporarily work from another state, or even country.
I HEAR YOU, and I understand your frustrations when you go to apply for a "remote" job and then get hit with a surprise location requirement--or worse, an actual on-site or hybrid bait-and-switch.
This is NOT a defense or excuse for companies being intentionally deceptive or just bad at communicating. We can only hope that job descriptions are detailed and specific enough to explain the preferred or required states, as well as any travel expectations that could justify a geographical requirement. It may also indicate a regional preference because of time zone differences and hours/availability.
These are still "remote" jobs, but all of these should be clear in the job posting. If they are not, then proceed with your frustration!!! But don't take it out on the recruiters, and please, PLEASE ask for clarification whenever you can.
Good luck to the jobseekers navigating this grey area--keep on keepin' on and know your worth!
