India ended this Asian Games in a blaze of glory with 107 medals - including 28 gold medals and over 30 silver medals - while this is an amazing performance, our highest ever medal tally and closing the gap with Japan and Korea significantly (China is in a different orbit) , what was heartwarming was the selfless effort put in by mulriole parties which resulted in this phenomenal performance There are so many catalysts/ enablers who deserve the credit - this type of transformation doesnt happen overnight im sure i must have missed a few names - have just mentioned top of the mind recall names throughout this page - so no offence meant if anyone has been missed out - thats my bad There are private sector companies like Reliance, Tatas, Jsw who invested significant amoubts to boost the medal quest There are largely individual run training camps like Gopichand academy, Prakash padukone, the boxing and wrestling assembly line of sorts which may or may not be getting formal sector funding Viren Rasquina ex India hockey team captain helping bring results as CEO of revolutionaty idea of Olympic Gold Quest which was the brainchild of legends like Prakash Padukone, Geet Sethi and industrialists and professionals like Niraj Bajaj, Shitin Desai, Samir Kotecha founded in 2010 with a clear goal of enabling and encouraging deserving sportspersons to win Olympic medals for India Bcci pumping IPL money in other sports, the success of Kabaddi league and hockey legues bringing in money in those sports and attracting fresh talent There are So many experienced coaches in various sports over the years selflessly mentoring talent with little or no monetary benefits/ incentives - purely motivated by the love of country, their sport and their students Basically identifying deserving talent early and enabling and encouraging them to reach their top potential and providing the facilities for training and monetary incentive for winning is the tonic - the entry of corporates in funding these initiatives has resulted in aiding encouraging and scaling up what used to be a more individual coach driven show to a now more institutional and sustainable initiative From 1980 when Prakash Padukone won All England to 1983 world cup to 1985 world championship to 2007 t 20 world cup to 2011 odi world cup to all athletics n shooting chess wins over the years in asian games, olympics and world championships - politicians have always felicitated winners and done photo ops - so wont even go there - after this asiad performance i hope the politicians keep aside some percentage of the funds they get in electoral bonds and / or moneys they use to buy MLAs n MPs - instead use the funds to help funding more sportspersons and see India emerge as a true leader in sports - this may be the best advertisement for them than plastering highways with posters showing their own grinning faces Kudos to the sports persons, coaches and all enablers for bringing so much joy 👍👍👍👍

'Why did India lose the world cup final against Australia ?' I was conducting the regular product training for 42 New joiners in our organisation when I decided to start with an ice breaker. I threw a probing question regarding a latest development close to heart of every Indian and it obviously turned out to be - 'Why did India lose the World cup final against Australia ?' It invited all kinds of responses as expected and intentionally done. Some said because we played timidly, some said because of the same umpire in every world cup match that we had lost, some named specific players who played badly, some said it against odd fall of wickets of so and so player, few referred it as our overconfidence, experts blamed the law of averages etc etc etc. It took just good 5 mins for them to calm down their frustration. I then suggested- these were just outcomes or speculations. What was the root cause? And there was silence in the room. Then I added my 2 cents. It was because Australia was better prepared than us on that day. This can be seen in all of their choices- decision to bowl first after winning toss against all statistics, fielders at unusual positions customised for each Indian batsman, die-hard fielding that saved innumerable runs, bowling tightly to fetch runs scarcely and finally big batting partnership to win the match. I related it to the session that was about to commence. The winners over-prepare themselves and the trophy 🏆 certainly goes to the best prepared on a given day irrespective of past performances or accolades. As professionals we should also be thoroughly prepared with the product/ market knowledge, much more than our competitors even if we are playing it on a foreign soil/ market favorable to opposition/competition and the audience/ TG is one sided crowd ready to whip us apart at any given moment. Sport creates winners and losers. >> To be fair in this World Cup both finalists have excelled - (gutting for India who won 10 from 10 games) the slow conditions for the final made it slightly one sided but the Aussies have beaten the favourites and done it again. I was loving watching Rohit and Virat bat though! Many of the Aussie players had been there in the pressure cooker of the 2015 World Cup win at home and they stood up again today. To beat the home team with 120,000 fans in blue screaming against them was amazing. The Aussies have such belief - winning is part of their identity so they find a way to win even when things go against them. Travis Head exemplified that with the catch of Rohit Sharma and his innings. 50 over cricket is like the 1500m in athletics - sitting between the 100m power sprint (T20) and the endurance marathon (5 day Tests) The truth is you need a calm mindset and skills from both end of the scale to win in 50 overs consistently. The media talk about form and par scores but the only things that matter are self and situational awareness - doing the right thing moment by moment based on the conditions. The team in gold lifts the golden trophy - India need to use the blues as motivation to go one step further next time. India’s tryst with Olympics 2024 comes to an end with a total tally of 6 medals with a slight hope of a 7th if the verdict for Vinesh Phogat comes in India’s favor. This definitely is not our best medal tally in Olympics, although I believe this shouldn’t be the sole benchmarking barometer. The thought is in sharp contrast to the modern “only-result” oriented world, however this is a gradual process and clearly India has made significant progress in promoting grassroot improvements capable of producing world’s best athletes and making them serious contenders of podium spots in coming years. While Javelin, Hockey and wrestling made India feature in back-to-back Olympic medals, it was shooting that garnered highest number of medals after a long hiatus since last Olympic medal won in London, 2012. The category also featured multiple 4th place finishes for India and closely evading Manu Bhaker from being the most decorated Olympian from Independent India. Far impressive have been the age at which these medals have been won. Neeraj Chopra is still 26 (was 23 when he won Gold), Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh are 22 each while Aman Shehrawat is 21. Clearly depicts the hard work that has gone at ground levels in making them ready physically and more importantly, mentally. With age well on their sides, hope that they are well nurtured and establish bright illustrious careers as for India, people have always looked up to indigenous role models before exuding world dominance. There has been share of disappointments too. India has long invested in archery and badminton with fair share of representation. Both these categories had a 4th place finish but the overall performance had been sub-par. I feel the main issue was of mental toughness and consistency for there were clear advantages given away at critical junctures. Lakshya Sen stood out for me in badminton and as Axelsen said, he should be a prime contender in subsequent championships. Boxing went without medal however the early bouts with best seeded boxers did play a part in snatching the opportunity. Frequent changes in coaching staff in last 3 years did weaken the overall contention. Similar internal turmoil in wrestling resulted in only 1 medal which was clearly dominated by Indian men in the last edition. India need to imbibe some good practices from China who have been a regular podium finisher and the only nation to topple US in medal tally in last 30 years. India and China had once been at similar geo-political situation but the latter had surpassed global development in every sphere. Participation and skillset in swimming and athletics, which have the highest medal opportunities, remain subdued. Bidding adieu to this version of Olympics, with an ongoing unfulfilled desire of seeing India’s national anthem play in an European country. Though the hopes remain firm. P.S: The above are my personal thoughts and based on my own research. Difference in opinion from others is welcomed.

Indians need to move away from the "chalta hai" and "thoda adjust karo" mindset. Being 100 grams overweight violates the rules, and in sports, rules must be strictly followed. Usain Bolt, one of the greatest athletes ever, was the main attraction at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu. He was expected to win, as he was far ahead of his competition, to the point where he could have taken a nap during his 100m sprint and still emerged victorious. However, he made a false start by just 1/100th of a second—an insignificant amount of time, especially for someone who regularly won races by at least 1/10th of a second. Yet, the rules were clear: no second chances. Bolt had to walk off and was disqualified from the race. This would be like telling Virat Kohli he couldn't bat in a World Cup final because he didn't take his stance in time—a massive disappointment for sports fans. The world tuned in to watch Usain Bolt, and in an instant, he became a spectator, watching his less accomplished rivals claim medals. Despite this, you didn’t see Jamaicans creating an uproar. There were no conspiracy theories about Americans cheating Bolt, no claims that someone rigged the starting gun. In contrast, Indians often accept a 10:30 AM arrival for a 10:00 AM appointment, break traffic signals, and drive on the wrong side of the road, all with a "chalta hai" attitude. But this isn't the global standard. It’s tough, it’s heartbreaking, but it’s the law, and it applies to everyone equally. When we learn to accept losses with the right spirit, we will begin to succeed as a nation. Ricky Ponting won the 2003 World Cup with a regular bat, and Travis Head dominated us in 2023. No one cheated on us. In sports, sometimes you lose. Even in the 2024 Olympic hockey semifinals, we were the better team, but Germany won. We need to learn to accept this.
