A nervous episode in Investment Banking Sitting in a high-pressure meeting between the management teams (i.e. CEO, CFO, etc.) of multi-crore cap companies, as the youngest person in the room. Typically, an Associate/VP would accompany the MD on these meetings between the IB’s client and the counterparty, given the sensitive nature of the information being shared and the seniority of those involved in the meetings (CEO/CFO-levels). Here comes the twist. Lets say, the Associate has to pull out the last minute and you (a first year Analyst in your early 20s) get para dropped the last minute to fit in his shoes. The experience will be nerve-wrecking to say the least Not only do you have to make sure absolutely everything goes smoothly logistically (meeting materials, wifi/teleconference stuff etc.), but also take detailed notes and pay enough attention during the meeting to answer any model/materials-related questions. You will be the youngest person in the room by ~10+ years, with the next youngest guy being the VP of the investment bank advising the counterparty, who would typically be in mid to late 30s. Average age in the room can probably be around 45-50 years. But there is excitement as well You will witness the big shots arriving to the meeting, It will be blend of excitement (about how cool it would be to witness two power management teams engaging in in-depth discussions) and nervousness that if there were any hiccups logistically, you would be fully responsible for solving it real time and with minimal disruption to the meeting. Although nerve-wracking and stressful at times, these experiences definitely are some of the most interesting things you will do as an investment banking analyst. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learn practical investment banking I am starting the next batch of my Live Investment Banking program at Wizenius - Be Deal Ready from July 14th.
