Spot on! Civil aviation has separate rulebooks for different airplane sizes (like FAR 25 for big passenger jets). Military aircraft certification, on the other hand, is more like a checklist for each system on the plane, from wings to electronics (think MIL-HDBK-516C and EMACC). Aircraft manufacturer Hawker Siddeley (now BAE Systems), designed and built the Hawk as an advanced training aircraft for Royal Air Force fast jet pilots. The prototype first flew in 1974 and Hawks entered RAF service in 1976. More than 1,000 have been sold worldwide including the UK, Canada, Australia, Finland and Zimbabwe. The Hawk T1 is a fully aerobatic, low-wing two-seat training aircraft that is still used in a number of roles for the RAF. Hawks are the aircraft flown by the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows. Folland Gnats were replaced by Hawks as the team aircraft in 1979. On July 29, 1985, the Kawasaki T-4 jet trainer aircraft, developed and manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, made its first flight. This subsonic intermediate trainer is exclusively operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), largely due to historical restrictions on the export of military hardware. The T-4 was designed to replace older training aircraft, such as the Lockheed T-33 and Fuji T-1, and features advanced avionics and a transonic airfoil that enhance its agility and performance, making it suitable for training pilots on modern combat aircraft. Following the end of the agreement with the USMC for the training of the Italian Navy's F-35B pilots, three new pilots attended the ground school at MCAS Beaufort before moving to Amendola and complete their training with the Air Force. In order to complete the qualification course, both the Air Force and Navy dedicated a team of instructors and technical personnel coordinated by the Training and Standardization Support Center of the 32nd Wing. This joint training is part of the synergy both services created as both employ the F-35B. In addition to standardizing the Techniques, Tactics and Procedures, both services often train together from austere locations and on the ITS Cavour aircraft carrier. The ItAF is, in fact, building an air expeditionary capability around the F-35B, while the Navy is using the F-35B to replace the ageing AV-8B+. The objective is to have both services able to operate jointly on land and sea. Moreover, the Navy’s F-35B are currently based at Amendola Air Base for more efficient management of the fleet, until there are enough aircraft ready to be based at Grottaglie Naval Air Station.
