I noticed this phenomenal sleight of hand by Kissan on Revant Himatsingka (Food Pharmer)'s LinkedIn post. On the packaging for the 'Fresh Tomato Ketchup', as per FSSAI's rule, they are supposed to add a disclaimer for words like 'natural', 'pure', 'authentic', 'fresh', 'original', 'real', etc. that may give a false perception about the product's nature to customers. How is a disclaimer usually added? There is usually a '*' and it is carried in another part of the pack where the * is explained. What had Kissan done? Instead of a star they use a 'β' (Greek lowercase 'Beta') that is a completely alien character when it comes to such disclaimers and connected fine prints. Worse, in another instance, Kissan uses a picture of a tomato and another tomato on the back to indicate what this tomato supposedly meant! Imagine, a 'tomato' on a pack of tomato ketchup... which people can easily mistake to be a design element in the pack! Why go through such levels of deception just to skirt around FSSAI's rule? This is clearly a 'dark pattern' tactic in packaging design. #darkpattern #design #packaging
