Behind every successful film, for sure there is a bunch of  unexpected challenges. In my latest feature film, we faced a unique problem. Rather I’d call it a hiccup! The script, which we were in love with, was  12 minutes too long for the festival we had our eye on. We were stuck. What could we cut? We sat down, ate some pizza, and watched the whole movie while carefully analyzing scene by scene to see the lag that we could knock off. We looked for scenes that were repetitive,  didn't move the story forward or felt out of place. We made tough decisions, cutting moments we genuinely loved. It was heartbreaking. But the result was worth it.  The film was streamlined and more impactful. The lesson? Challenges are always not as simple as they seem; not necessarily complicated either! And there are no short cuts when you are conscious about the quality and the results! They're sometimes sparked by misunderstanding or miscommunication too! And the only way out? Communication. One of the most important things to take into consideration before you start the production of you short film is the location in where it takes place, so here are some insights that will help you to create an exceptional short film: - Choosing fantastic locations adds production value without spending lots of money. It has a big impact on how the film looks and feels for the audience. - For residential properties, Airbnb and VRBO are great platforms. - Focus on locations that you can get for low or no cost, they are one of the areas you can usually save a lot of money. - The best locations are ones that you have full reign over and don’t have to worry about people coming in and out of. - The less travel or company moves you have to do the better. One of the best short films I’ve ever done was shot in a single location. Grip and Electric are an essential part of the production for a short film, so I wanted to share some insights on how to best work with your grip and electric team. - Most DPs have relationships with grips and gaffers who they like and have worked with previously. - It’s often helpful to work with HODs who own gear so they can offer discounted rates on equipment for your short. - Working with crew who own their own equipment not only saves you money but also reduces setting up rental accounts. - Do a pre-light to allow your G&E team to come in before the rest of the crew to get grip and electrical equipment set up. 7 years ago, I was somehow able to gather the most talented people I know to work unpaid overnights for a short film that is very near and dear to my heart. Midnight is still the project I am the most proud of, because it was a series of many firsts that all taught me valuable lessons and set me on the path I’m on today. It was the first completely independent project I did, the first time we had to build a set, and the first time I won an audience choice award In the 7 years since we filmed, I’ve learned so much and have discovered so many things. So much so, that I realized everyone’s hard work and talent was being undermined by the shoddy VFX work I did when I didn’t know what I was doing. So, it’s with great excitement that I present Midnight - remastered! I did an entire VFX overhaul, and included a breakdown of the process for anyone who’s interested!
