On International Women's Day, I want to highlight the importance of gender parity in the #insurance industry. While we've made progress in recent years, we have a long way to go. There are many actions organisations and individuals can – and must – take to drive faster progress. At Swiss Re, we're committed to improving gender equality, aiming to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace for everyone. I see firsthand how crucial diversity is to a successful digital transformation that caters to the needs of our customers and avoids bias, one of the risks of advanced data use. As Hispanic Heritage Month unfolds, I find myself reflecting on my Venezuelan roots while residing in the UK. This period sparks pride and joy, prompting me to explore ways to honor my vibrant heritage in a different cultural setting. The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month may be more prominent in the U.S. compared to the UK and Europe, where our community is smaller. This raises the question of why we should care and discuss it. I believe it goes beyond mere recognition; it's about fostering a culture where every voice is valued and embraced, celebrating our diversity. It can be daunting forming useful and authentic relationships as an immigrant or working in a space where there is under-representation. I think back to 15 years ago when I moved to the UK as a young doctor, one year post graduation. Starting my first role within a few months of my arrival, trying to settle in a new culture, learn quickly and do my work well. A friendly face, a warm conversation and tips on how to settle into the role from someone who has navigated similar challenges is a real game changer. I think about how much easier it was for me to adapt because I had access to someone from a similar background who had lived here for a few years, who guided me through the process, ensured I didn’t make the same mistakes they did and connected me with other people who were of immense help to me. Such connections provide a head start that will accelerate your journey especially in career and business as it did for me. This is why I have founded Lodestar Women's Network- a safe space for black career and business women to make such vital connections and get practical easily implementable strategies to ease the transition, accelerate their journey and thrive in their careers and business.
