Dancing is one of my go-to activities to stay motivated, sane, and stress-free. If you know me, you know I love exploring new styles and understanding the origins of the movements I perform. However, performance anxiety is a real struggle! During my recent Afrobeats/Amapiano training, everything was fine until I had to perform in a smaller group. Suddenly, I forgot half of the routine. Here are a few things I'm trying out: - Staying focused (easier said than done) - Not comparing myself to others - Chewing gum to trick my brain into relaxation - Letting go of expectations and just having fun What strategies do you use to conquer performance anxiety? JUST BEFORE YOU SAY I CAN'T AGAIN A must read if you're about to give up again ⤵️ I know you've tried all you can I know you've given it all it takes And so you're saying "Not anymore, I'm Done!". I'm not here to motivate you I'm not even going to tell you to try again But I want us to go practical, Oh yes, practical 😇 Ask yourself 🤔 What drives me the most? What is that thing I love doing over and over? Maybe yours could be reading, drawing, singing or even dancing Ok, let's get it clearer Are there not days when your body doesn't feel like dancing, but the only reason you dance is because you love dancing 🙂 Oh, did I catch you there?😅 Now to the Practical ➡️ Take that same zeal you have for what you love and channel it to that thing you're about to give up on. Then try again, try harder, keep trying till you get your desired result 👍 And yes that's it It's that simple 💯 Another quick tip✅ Close your eyes and imagine yourself doing that thing you want to give up at. Take a look into how you'll feel if you eventually get it done And how fulfilled you'll be😌. After this two tasks, Sit down and ask yourself again Do I still want to give up? A month ago, I started dancing 💃 Here's what I've learned about communication 👇 It's mindblowing how much I can say without saying a word - just by using my body language and emotions. But it's not easy to connect my brain with the moves, keep up with the beat, and, most importantly, tell a story. Love being a newbie again. Raw. Imperfect. And give myself the freedom to fail. It's funny to feel when dancing: "Oh, I was so graceful there." Then, watching a video: "Nope, far from that! But it's fun to learn." 😅 Whenever I start overthinking and judging – "I can't do this! What if I mess up?" – I make a mistake. Learning to be in a state of non-judgmental awareness. As I'm exploring different styles - contemporary, jazz funk, hip hop, etc. - it's fascinating to learn to be different and flexible. When my dance teacher gives me feedback and I act on it, she's like, "Maria, I'm glad you hear me!" Well, as I'm coaching my clients on the art of listening, I practice what I preach. I try to be fully present, listen, and take action - that's how I gain confidence. On top of that, dancing really helps my mental health. We live in tough times. What about you, guys? The last 1,5 year has been a difficult one. I experienced more loss than I could ever imagine and not one area of my life remained unaffected. It's hard because when one is confronted with an amount of change and loss this big, it's easy to feel isolated and overwhelmed. As Erin says below, "loss makes us brave". It's true, but throughout all the misery, isolation and overwhelm, it's hard to remind yourself that you are capable and strong and braver than you could ever imagine. One thing is definitely true: it really changes a person and I can honestly say: i have changed a lot and I welcome change now more than ever, because it's one thing to go through hell, but it's another to stay stuck there. Something that I started doing in the beginning of this year has changed me more than I could have ever expected, in the most positive and beautiful way. In January I started dancing again. It had been 20 years and a 30+ year old body, does not learn quite as fast as a 10+ body does. Despite the challenge of learning the steps and overcoming my own ego, I started to burst with energy. I started to change for the better. Like Erin says below, there are 3 things that keep you wild and full of passion and for me dancing is all three! For me dancing is love, dancing is music and dancing is art. And I am proud to share that this weekend, all 3, again will come together, when I will be performing together with the other girls for two sold-out shows. So, for everyone that had to be more brave for the last couple of months, weeks, days, than they had the opportunity to be wild and full of passion, I see you and you are one of the bravest persons I know. On January 1st of 2021, I started dancing... and I've never stopped. Today marks 1,287 days of consecutive dancing for me. In 2022, we started an official 'Kula Cloth Dance Experiment' -- and over the past 900+ days, thousands of folks have danced with me and our Joy Facilitators in our daily virtual dance parties. We meet and meditate and dance together every single solitary day -- just to feel joy through movement and to 'see what happens'. Even on days when it feels tough to dance. I don't hear too many entrepreneurs talking about 'metrics' like the amount of days that they've danced in a row -- and I hope I can change that, because dance has helped me and Kula more than any amount of looking at a spreadsheet ever has. I've never wanted to be an 'normal entrepreneur' because 'normal' things don't excite me very much, and, as I’ve discovered, they don't always help me. Why do I have to follow ‘the rules’? What if I can just make new ones that are a lot more impactful, loving and fun?? Dance has brought joy into my life, even on the days when I felt like I couldn't get my head above water. Even on the most challenging days -- I can always move my body to the music and remember that there is something much more important -- there is the love and connection that we share with each other as humans on this planet. Maybe this is a 'weird' way of looking at a business, but it's helped me grow in ways that are unexpected and beautiful -- and, most importantly, it has brought a lot of joy and friendship and love into the lives of a lot of other people. And shouldn't that be the real goal of any business? To make the world a better place?
