Great Place To Work India has unveiled a comprehensive report on India’s Best Workplaces™ in IT & IT-BPM sector, with insights gathered from a staggering 1.8 million employees. The report showcases the remarkable resilience of the IT industry while highlighting pivotal shifts in employee perceptions and sentiments. Female senior managers in particular experience a 5% higher burnout rate than male counterparts. Since the pandemic, we have seen a dramatic shift in the way that people work: Now, we are spending more time engaging in hybrid work models that open us up to greater collaboration and, at times, greater rates of burn out. HP's Work Relationship Index has tracked people's attitudes to work around the world and some markets are definitely managing hitting the ball out of the park! Indonesia’s knowledge workers reported a healthier relationship with work than global knowledge workers, at 38% vs the global average of 27%, according HP’s Work Relationship Index. The study covers over 15,000 workers across 12 countries and explores the changing role of work in people’s lives, their skills, abilities, tools and workspaces, and their expectations of leadership. The study also examined the impact work has on employee well-being, productivity, engagement and culture. Three out of four Indonesian knowledge workers have also become more aware of their relationship with work and how their treatment in the workplace can negatively impact other aspects of their life including physical health, personal passions and relationships. Employees have made it clear that they are looking for greater trust, agency and purpose at work. This morning, together with my honorary secretary Mr Iman Yusoff, I attended the engagement on Tripartite guidelines on Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA) requests organised by SNEF. It was an engaging session led by, Minister of State for Education and Manpower, Ms Siow Huang Gan. TACs in attendance consists of, Association of Small & Medium Enterprises, Singapore Business Federation, Singapore International Chamber of Commerce, Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SMCCI). Based on an employer's point of view, the attendees shared couple of inputs on how FWA can be both helpful and challenging. Most business owners these days are aware of the importance of building a workplace where employees are respected and appreciated, and we believe by following the tripartite guidelines can be helpful for a start. More companies are beginning to recognise the importance and benefits of embracing flexible working arrangements. After many companies started offering work-from-home arrangements during the pandemic, most still maintain the arrangement. For example, Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SMCCI) arrange a 3:2 work days; 3 days in office and 2 days WFH. I choose to practice this arrangement to allow my secretariats flexibility especially for those who are caregivers. There are bound to have challenges such as distractions. However, with proper process in place, flexible work arrangements can go a long way in lifting the spirits of employees. It is definitely not easy especially for smaller companies, as most staffs double hats and their job scope requires them physically. For such case, how do we practice fairness when one staff can have FWA more than the other. This is one good example of what employer is facing. But, the engagement which I attended this morning organized by SNEF can be very useful. It allows TACs like SMCCI to bring up challenges by business owners under our care and find solutions on dealing it the right way, according to the tripartite guidelines. Flexibility plays a crucial role in today’s workplace. In fact, global figures show that 66% of employees believe flexibility is essential. In Singapore, this sentiment is shared by an overwhelming majority (85%) of employees. However, there’s a gap between what Singaporean employers believe they offer regarding flexibility and what employees experience. In an article in the The Business Times, Karthik Sudhakar, Strategy & Operations Lead, Indeed Singapore and India, delves into the findings of the Beyond 9 to 5: The Future of Flexibility in Work report. The recent study by Indeed revealed 83 per cent of employers claim to provide flexibility in the workplace, but only 61 per cent of employees agree. Employers are still not listening to employees who want flexible working conditions: "How flexible are workplaces in Singapore? Employers and employees differ in views". "When it comes to flexible work arrangements in Singapore, it seems that there is a mismatch between what employers believe they are providing, and what employees actually want or experience. A report released on Tuesday said that 83 per cent of Singapore employers think their workplaces support flexible arrangements, while only 61 per cent of employees feel the same way.😲🙄🤣🤦♂️ “This shows that employers’ understanding of flexibility isn’t the same as employees’,” said the report by job search platform Indeed. It added: “It is crucial for organisations to take employees’ preferences into consideration and find ways to offer appropriate flexible arrangements – particularly, for those who deem it essential.” Retail has the greatest divide between the views of employers and employees, with only 42 per cent of employees believing they have flexibility despite 80 per cent of employers claiming to provide flexible work arrangements. Perceptions were most aligned in the finance industry, where 73 per cent of employees thought they had flexibility, and 78 per cent of employers felt they offered it. Generally, employees said that flexibility makes them feel productive and provides better work-life balance. The poll also showed that while mental health and well-being are not as greatly affected by flexible arrangements as productivity and work-life balance are, the impact is still considerable." Of course they do! Not rocket science. Hybrid working is what employees want in Singapore and globally. Flexible work in India isn’t just a trend, it's a complex puzzle. As an employer, I see its challenges firsthand. It’s time to address the elephant in the room: while flexibility is vital, its abuse under the guise of convenience is a growing concern. In our diverse landscape, flexibility can’t be a blanket term. It must align with individual roles, company goals, and our unique cultural fabric. But how do we ensure it’s not misused? The answer lies in clear policies, regular check-ins, and a culture of mutual trust and responsibility. We need a shift in mindset. Flexible work isn't a free pass to less productivity; it’s a tool for smarter, more efficient work. It's about balancing employee needs with organisational integrity. So, let's redefine flexibility: not as an easy out, but as a strategic approach to work that benefits both the individual and the organization.
