This will be a challenge because the demand for new aircraft continues to outstrip the supplies that OEMs are able to provide. This is especially true for narrowbody aircraft. Although Airbus managed to increase production in 2023, volume deliveries are still lagging, and Boeing continues to deal with a number of quality control issues... The global narrow-body supply is further hindered by the Pratt & Whitney powder metal issues experienced with their GTF engines. Currently, hundreds of aircraft are grounded requiring maintenance. Covid put a dent in the aviation sector, with passengers and airlines screaming back in droves to bring air travel back from the brink. But now these engine and production issues are going to do another number on the operators’ strategic growth plans. Sure, it’ll slow growth down a bit, but it’s also going to present a struggle for carriers that aren’t prepared for this dip. #MichaelLevine always said that the airline industry business was peaks and valleys, and we should always be preparing (operationally and financially) for the “valleys”. Which air carriers do you see able to continue to compete and survive the dip these next 1-2 years?

The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft has been grounded since March 2019 due to two fatal crashes that occurred in Indonesia and Ethiopia. The crashes were caused by a faulty sensor system that pointed to a malfunctioning MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System) system, which automatically pushed the plane's nose down, causing the crashes. In September 2020, Boeing identified a manufacturing issue with a part produced by Spirit AeroSystems, a supplier of fuselage sections for the 737 MAX. The part, known as the fuselage section 59 (FS59), is responsible for supporting the wings and contains critical systems such as fuel tanks and electrical wiring. The issue was discovered during an inspection of the FS59 part manufactured by Spirit AeroSystems. The part did not meet Boeing's quality standards, which could lead to a loss of structural integrity in flight. Boeing issued a notice to its customers warning them of the potential issue and recommending that they inspect their aircraft to identify any affected parts. Spirit AeroSystems manufactured the FS59 part at its plant in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The company has since issued a recall and is working with Boeing to repair or replace the affected parts. The exact reason why the part was manufactured incorrectly is not publicly known, but it is likely due to human error or inadequate quality control measures at the manufacturing facility. Boeing has said that the issue does not affect the safety of the aircraft in flight, but it is still important for operators to address the issue to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. The FAA has also issued an airworthiness directive requiring airlines to inspect and repair or replace the affected parts. It's worth noting that this issue is separate from the MCAS system that led to the grounding of the 737 MAX in 2019. The 777X was officially launched in 2013, but after years of delays caused by the pandemic, engine, fuselage and other issues, largest twin-engined jet- Boeing 777X has restarted it’s certification flight trials after finally receiving Type Inspection Authorization (TIA). The TIA is a key certification milestone and has been a long time coming. In June 2021, the FAA issued the following statement after Boeing committed to a “major software update” to the aircraft to fix several issues including a “fix for the un-commanded pitch event that occurred on December 8, 2020.” This incident involved test aircraft N779XX, which suffered a serious flight control incident. “The FAA and Boeing have been discussing the TIA readiness of the Boeing Model 777-9 in numerous meetings over the past nine months. Based on our assessment, the FAA considers that the aircraft is not yet ready for TIA, even if it is a phased TIA of limited scope with a small number of certification flight test plans proposed.” The aircraft is essentially a stretched version of the hugely successful 777 with new engines (GE-9X) and an extended carbon-fiber wing with folding wingtips. The 777X has 11 feet more span on each wing, but the folding wing design will provide high-span efficiency while maintaining ICAO Code E (FAA Group V) airport compatibility. This innovative folding wings design also requires the FAA to satisfy certain certification conditions to address worst-case situations. The 777X GE-9X engine will provide 5% Lower SFC- Specific Fuel Consumption than any other competing engine, 10% Lower Fuel Costs vs. GE90-115B (777-300ER), 8db Noise Levels within stage 5 Margin and 55% Emissions within CAEP/8 Margin.
