What a difference a month makes! After posting withdrawals of €5bn in April, European long-term fund flows bounced back into the black in May, exceeding €40bn. Even active mutual fund strategies post solid subscriptions (€8bn) after haemorrhaging €21bn in the previous month. However, the standout winners in May are ETFs, which record net sales of €23bn. Cross-border ETF sales bolster the fortunes of groups at the top of the leaderboard, with BlackRock once again in pole position.

Eurizon planning to launch its first ETF? As Michael O'Riordan says, this shows that ETFs "are now being taken seriously by mutual fund managers" if they want to stay relevant.
