I came across this article in Packaging Scotland recently and I wanted to share it, along with my own thoughts…
The look and balance looks pretty spot on to me and although I understand why this is happening, ie the deposit return schemes’ looming black shadow over the drinks industry, and peer pressure to ensure everything is totally sustainable and green; I believe that some products need and depend on the consumer being attracted to the basic aesthetics.
Namely the presentation, which in Whisky's case is clearly articulating the value, the kudos and the rich amber hues, all of which are not only attractive, but indicate a lot about cask influences.
And that’s before you get to the nitty gritty of texture, finishes, the complex aromas and actual legs and flavour!
To me there’s something truly beautiful and special about spirits packaging, particularly Uisge beatha.
Although this solution is ingenious and hats off to Diageo, it’s a massive shame some political decision makers are forcing a vital sector to expend time, effort and resources in this way.
