Augusta National is far more than a golf club, and it's far more than the site for one of the world's leading sporting events. Indeed, it is a one-of-its-kind organization that exemplifies excellence across a multitude of disciplines. As I departed from Augusta over the weekend, I reflected on this special place that Jim Nanz aptly described on television as "a tradition unlike any other." (Augusta subsequently trademarked this phrase). Below are three observations that struck me as fundamental to Augusta's remarkable success. ✅ Attention to detail. At Augusta, every detail is attended to. From the perfect fairways, where not a single blade of grass appears out of place, to the spotless stands and the staff's service, nothing is overlooked. ✅ A vision unlike any other. Augusta was born in 1932 out of the dauntless vision of Bobby Jones (then an iconic US golfer) and British golf course architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie to be a leading national golf course that would host world-class competitions. The club's commitment to being the best is reflected in everything you see—from television coverage to positioning attendees as "patrons" rather than spectators to the club's blue-chip membership. ✅ Long-term decision-making. Augusta does not play for short-term wins. It is invested in long-term value creation and a fundamentally different product than other tournaments. It executes for the long term with unwavering commitment. The famous 330-yard Magnolia Lane that extends from the entrance gate to the clubhouse was paved in 1947, yet the large magnolia trees that line both sides of the road date to the late 1850s. Anchored in tradition but embracing change with cutting-edge technology and analysis—that, to me, is what makes Augusta great. If you have not visited the Masters, I would encourage you to do so—even if it is only to study the remarkable Augusta National institution. #AugustaNational #Golf #Excellence #MagnoliaLane #Tradition

The growth of golf is coming from the curious of golf, that’s right. But I think there is a big opportunity to bring back on courses all the players who quit (lack of time or patience to get the minimum level in order to take some pleasure or just to access the courses…) New off courses experiences are fun and accessible and surely the future of golf. So could do new on courses experiences ? What do you think of it ?
There's a supply problem in golf, but it's not what you might think. There are currently 550 golf courses, globally, in some stage of development (~63% of them in the US). That's a big number. What's concerning is that nearly 90% of these projects are private or resort courses. But, the growth of golf is coming from the "golf curious", new players being introduced to the game through off-course entertainment and then looking for what's next. Municipal courses, par 3s, public access, executive, himalayan putting, etc., represent only a small fraction of the new supply in golf. Problem? Opportunity? Let us know what you think. By the way, if you want access to our full list of all 550 active golf course projects, comment below and we'll pass along. ** UPDATE: Huge response to this post and great conversations happening. Great insights from Old Tom Capital. In the business world, the delicate balance between supply and demand shapes success. The golf industry currently is providing a unique case study: Demand Insights: Golf’s popularity is on the rise, driven by both seasoned players and the “golf curious.” These newcomers seek accessible experiences beyond traditional courses. Supply Challenges: However, the supply side – the golf courses – is leaning heavily toward private or resort layouts. Is this alignment with market demand? Market Wisdom: Businesses across industries can learn from golf’s dance. Conduct thorough market research, listen to customer preferences, and avoid oversupply or incorrect supply. #supplyanddemand #marketinsights #businessstrategy #golfbusiness #golfinvesting #strategy

CEO / founder of ATLANTIC EXPATS, we provide relocation concierge services, so European expats can have the most seamless transition into the Hampton Roads area, Virginia, US.
GOLF ⛳️ Golf in the US and Europe shares a common origin but has evolved into distinct experiences. In the US 🇺🇸, golf courses tend to be more expansive and meticulously maintained, with an emphasis on luxurious amenities. American golf culture often revolves around resort-style courses and private country clubs, and the game is deeply intertwined with social and business networking. In contrast, European golf maintains a closer connection to the sport’s traditional roots. European courses often integrate more with the natural terrain, offering a more rugged and authentic feel. While the US emphasises grandeur, Europe prioritizes history and the natural beauty of the game. #atlanticexpats #expats #expatlife #topgolf #relocationspecialists #relocation #relocationservices #movetonorfolk #movetovirginiabeach #europeansintheusa

Who's going on a golf trip this year and where are you going? You're not alone. Last year, approximately 12.2 million U.S. adults (yes really) took a golf trip🏌♂️ According to the National Golf Foundation, this is close to the all-time recorded high set a year earlier and 20% higher than the annual average of the NGF measurement years from 1989-2023. The dollar impact is significant. Golf tourism overall is the second-biggest economic driver in the industry behind only facility operations, with golfers generating over $31 billion in travel-related golf expenditures within the U.S. Why? Consumers, perhaps more than ever, are focused on experiences. And while golf certainly qualifies as an experiential activity, a getaway golf trip – with family or friends – takes that experience… to another place. Read more:

It's an article I wrote and put online several years ago. It's worth reading. Especially if your backyard golf course is failing. https://lnkd.in/gd8iBkGi If it sounds familiar, write to me, mike@golfmak.com. I'll do a little research on your golf course and neighborhood. It won't cost you anything. Mike Kahn In golf since 1955 mike@golfmak.com.
