Despite ongoing concerns and well-publicized scandals, financial conflict-of-interest between US physicians and the drug industry remains common. US physicians receive over $2 billion in personal (non-research) payments from the drug industry annually. Medical oncologists are one of the highest earning specialist groups, especially influential "opinion leaders" who often conduct clinical trials and write clinical practice guidelines. This talk presents and summarizes findings regarding the distribution of industry money across oncologists, cancer hospitals, and - potentially of greatest concern - clinical practice guideline-writing panels. The presentation also shows recent and emerging evidence regarding the potential negative impact of industry money on clinical care delivery.

The Rising Tide Foundation Opens Request for Proposals (RFP): Chronic Cancer Pain Research This RFP was designed based on patient needs. It will focus on interventions for the prevention and/or treatment of cancer-related chronic pain. Specifically, the RFP welcome proposals focused on all types of cancer-related chronic pain, including but not limited to post-surgical pain, lymphedema-related pain, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, phantom pain, aromatase inhibitor-related joint pain, referred pain and bone metastasis pain. With all buzz around AI and the role it could play in clinical trial recruitment, there are still limitations. Spreading awareness is one such limitation. Research shows many clinical trials fail to recruit simply because patients are unaware clinical trials are even an option. Low awareness also tends to disproportionately affect minority groups with the FDA reporting that only 8% of participants in US based clinical trials are African-American compared to 13% of the total population. GoodLab Clinical Trials continues to close the Awareness Gap and buck this trend with close to 30% of it's users African-American through the month of May - more than twice the general population.

In this Medical Product Outsourcing op-ed by Dr. Jeff Andrews, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Integrated Diagnostic Solutions at BD Life Sciences, notes that unfortunately, the U.S. has fallen behind countries like Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Kenya, Australia and New Zealand, just to name a few, where women are empowered to self-collect for cervical cancer screening. (The FDA has not yet approved self-collection tests for cervical cancer screening in the US). Equally viable and effective, self-collection solutions allow women to collect their own samples without clinician assistance, and in some cases, from the privacy of their homes, foregoing not only the inconvenience but also the added expenses and discomfort often associated with in-person pelvic exams. Self-collection is less invasive. It does not require stirrups and a speculum – just a small swab. The more women can get screened, the more we can detect precancer early and prevent cervical cancer.
