The Nerve Center of an F1 Car — The Complex & Beautiful Steering Wheel
Formula 1 steering wheels are the nerve center of the car, allowing drivers to control every aspect of their car’s performance.
These steering wheels are a reflection of how complex and sophisticated modern F1 cars are. In the course of a lap, a driver typically makes five or six adjustments on top of the usual 50–70 upshifts and downshifts.
In 2024, a Formula 1 steering wheel typically has around 21 buttons, dials, and switches1. These come in various shapes and sizes, and some teams may have some extra buttons.
Formula 1 steering wheels have evolved over the years, from simple circles to the modern-day version that looks like it has come straight from a rocket ship.
It is the control console for the entire vehicle, allowing drivers to adjust the car’s brake balance, differential settings (more of that later), and fuel management on the fly, optimizing performance during different stages of the race.
Mercedes team has also a blue ‘M’ button — meant for ‘magic’. But it’s not what you think!
